In the Northeast it is common to make between $30. and $40. an hour and most hygienists work part time, with a few full timers. If you intend to work full time you may expect to work at multiple offices. Some offices offer benefits like retirement, uniforms, paid continuing education, etc, while others do not.

Reply:One of the dental hygienists at the office that I worked for was making $40 an hour. She had been there for 15 years. I have a good friend that is a hygienist and she said that you should not take no less than $25 an hour even if you have just came out of school. I'm sure that you can find a good hygiene program where you live.
Reply:A Dental Hygienist undertakes a rigorous college course with stringent pre-requisites. It is not something to undertake lightly. It is physically a very challenging job with many hazards. Very few hygienists are employed where there are benefits or retirement plans. Our employers can fire us on a whim, there is little to no job security. Almost every patient arrives saying that they would rather be giving birth than be about to have their teeth cleaned. So not much in the way of job appreciation! Also many hygienists are unable to find full time work in one office, we have to work in 2 or 3 diffierent offices in order to work full time hours.
