How long does it take to be ad dental hygenist, and how much do they make?

That depends on what state you live in and what types of dental hygiene programs are offered. There are certificate, associate degree, and bachelor's degree programs. There are even a few very backward states that allow dentists to train their chairside assistants to become hygienists. With all three types of official programs, there are pre-requisite courses that must be taken before applying to the program. There are a limited number of spaces available, so high grades are a must to insure acceptance. The length of the actual dental hygiene program is usually 2 years, no matter what degree is offered. With a B.S. (what I have), there is a full 2 years of undergraduate college pre-requisites that have to be taken prior to application.

I've been licensed for 22 years and have practiced for 16 of those years. I took 6 years off to stay home with my kids when they were preschoolers. Before I had kids, I worked 4 days/week (M - Th), now I work 3 days (T-Th). I live in OK and make $250/day with benefits (vacation, medical ins., holidays, sick pay, personal leave). A lot of dentists don't offer their hygienists any benefits though.

You must take one year of prerequisite classes, such as chemistry, anatomy. Then you will apply to a program and if excepted you will go for 2 more years, at least. This is the associates degree, there are colleges that do a bachelors degree program, which would be longer.

Then you must pass a national board and a state board in the state you wish to practice. Unfortunately at this point you have to have a license in each individual state to practice.

Salary depends on the area. Bigger cities will make more because of the cost of living. Average income would start at about $45,000 (this is only working 4 days a week). Obviously if you are in California you would make quite a bit more.
