My dental hygenist has seen this organism swimming on a slide with a sample of my saliva. The dentist wants me to take a very strong antibiotic for 2 weeks. She also wants my husband to take it although after 2 attempts they have not seen this parasite on his sample. Both of our mouths are healthy and we see the dentist 2 times a year. My health is fine and I'm having a hard time with taking an antibiotic when I feel fine and have no symptoms. But I don't want to ignore the dentist's advice either.
Should I take an antibiotic for trichomonas tenax?
Yes you should take the pills. Would you ignore a gynecologist who told you to take antibiotics? then why would you ignore you dentist?
You may not be sick right now, but if you they showed you what's swimming in your mouth, that's a good indication of elevated bacterial levels. You could end up with horrible gum disease and worse from this bacteria. And it can pass in your saliva, which is why they are worried about your husband.

Ok, Plz help. I wanna know more about cleaning at the dentist office.?
Ok, I went for my cleaning, and they cleaned %26amp; stuff %26amp; then they told me to come back later(another appointment) to finish it. Cus that same day I had to finish gettin my crown for my root canal. So I went for my other appointment %26amp; well the dental hygenist didnt finish my cleaning, i think the helper did, %26amp; all she did was polish it. I still have plaque %26amp; tartar buildt up. Is it ok? Doesnt patients have rights? They said they were busy so they kept makin more apointments, %26amp; rushing things. Does any one know more about Rights for patients at the dentist? lol, %26amp; are they allowed to make 2 appointments 4 cleaning? i had to make the 2ns aapointment just to polish my teeth, cudn ttheyhave dne that the first time? plus the 2ns time they didnt even check my teeth, they just plishe dit.
--so plz gime more info on cleaning at the dentist. How long it takes, %26amp; if they can do that( make another apponitmetn...) %26amp; we're not satisfied what do we do?
Ok, Plz help. I wanna know more about cleaning at the dentist office.?
Yes patients have rights. What they should have done was explained to you at the first appointment how many appointments they thought you would need to complete your treatment. It often does take more than one appointment to do a thourough cleaning depending on just how much build up you have. (you may think you only have a little bit but that may not be the case). If I were you I would be asking what qualification the person has that is doing the treatment for you.
Reply:sounds like you need a new dentist
Reply:not all Pt's can have their cleanings done in 1 visit, ask them to explain in detail the condition of you gums, is there pocketing, bleeding in any ares, then ask them to give you a treatment plan of how many visit they think you need, if they can;t supply this to you then consider a dentist who will explain you r dental health and care about your needs.
Reply:One type of cleaning is called a full mouth debridement and it is sometimes done in 2 visits. One to scale and one to polish. No one on here can give you a completely accurate answer, because we don't have your dental chart and x-rays in front of us, so I am not going to say the dental office did anything wrong.
Reply:sometimes patients need deeper cleanings...sometimes hygienists will only do a quadrant at a time...depending on how much has to be done...

Blood on Floss, Hair & HIV?
Hey guys, have a quick question for you. I just got back from the dentist, and I am freaking out a little. So at the end of the appointment, the dental hygenist was showing me the propper way to floss and she demonstrated on herself, putting a piece of floss between her teeth. I was sitting in the chair. When she took the floss off, she was flicking it around and I felt it touch the side of my hair.
Here is why I am worried: what if the floss had blood on it, resonable since it was inbetween her teeth, and when the floss came in contact with my hair, fresh, wet blood got in my hair? Can it soak into my hair and stay in it? Will a simple shower in hot water wash the blood out, or do I need to do something more drastic? Do I need to cut out the part of my hair that came into contact with the blood?
Can I get HIV or Hep C if the gal was infected, I took a shower and some got inmy, let's say, eye or mouth. Can I get it if if it stays in my hai? Please help.
Thanks
Blood on Floss, Hair %26amp; HIV?
Those viruses die within a few minutes of hitting the air first of all. Second of all, you can contract them through your hair. Your hair isn't alive and has nothing to do with your blood, which is were these things would need to go to infect you. Plus, if she's a dental hygienist, I'm guessing her gums are in good shape and are not bleeding when she's flossing (since healthy gums don't). All in all, i think you're safe. But i really think you should do some actual research into the diseases so you're not needlessly afraid, because while it was gross, it wasn't dangerous.
Reply:I don't think it is that easy to transmit. Don't worry so much. Do some reading on the Internet about it and it will stop your worrying.
Reply:It is EXTREMELY unlikely for you to have contracted HIV because not only does it need to be blood to blood or human fluid to open wound to do damage, HIV doesn't do too well when exposed to oxygen.
Reply:Just wash. The chance of anything like your thinking is 1 in trillion.
Reply:Wash your hair and you need never think about it again.
Reply:Bob your going to be okay. Your not going to get HIV.
Reply:Even if she was infected, which is highly unlikely. But no, there is simply not enough HIV viruses in a drop of blood, and the virus is incapable of getting into skin. Your hair is also made up of dead cells, so HIV is incapable of living off it long enough to make it inside your body.
I might also point out that there is a strong possibility it never actually touched you. You saw her flick it around and felt nervous because in your mind you imagined her hitting you with it. So much so that your mind may have even "felt" her hit you with it when she actually never even came close. Your mind may have imagined it. I'm not saying that is definitely what happened, but dentists are usually very careful (out of fear of a lawsuit), not to do things like that. It might have happened, but even so there is absolutely no danger here of HIV or any other STD haven't gotten you on this one.
Reply:WOW dont worry you need an open wound to have even a remote chance of transfer
Reply:As everyone else stated, the possiblity is virtually non existent...However, it is possible to transmit the HIV virus via toothbrushes, floss and etc., but only if the person infected uses that particular item on a cut, scrape, or some other wound. The other person could become infected by introducing that person's blood to their own body via cuts (even tiny ones), sexual contact and the like. Unless you have a cut on your head in the same area the floss hit you and not much hair covering that area, you shouldn't have to worry.
Also, just because the floss was used by a dentist doesn't mean he/she didn't have a cut in their mouth that would come in contact with the floss. One can cut their mouth, gums and etc with food, opening something with their mouth, a canker sore, a bit lip and etc.
But, again, it's highly unlikey you could be exposed to that virus in the manner you described.

Seeking career suggestions?
Hi, I just graduated with a BS in Communications, but I'm not sure what my career options are with that degree. Any thoughts?
I'm at that phase in life where I'm trying to "find my calling), I'm even thinking about going back to school to become a dental hygenist (although I'd have to travel an hour to and from class each day).
I'm ready to have a "real" job that is respectible, and that pays decent. Any suggestions would be more than appreciated!
Thanks again!

Any job is respectible, it's all in your mind.
If you take good care of yourself you can get as high as you want.

Which job pays more?
A massage therapist or a dental hygenist?
Which job pays more?
Usually the hygienist based on location, but the question you should be asking yourself is which job would you enjoy more

I brush my teeth daily with baking soda instead of tooth paste. Can this take the enamel off?
I've been brushing my teeth lately with just plain baking soda. Usually 2-3 times a day. A friend, whose sister is a dental hygenist, said that it will take the enamel off your teeth and is not good to do this every day. Is this true?
I brush my teeth daily with baking soda instead of tooth paste. Can this take the enamel off?
If you want to use baking soda every day then mix it in a cup of water first and dip your brush in the water. It is the ruff powder that will strip your teeth. if it is dissolved in water you still get the odor out but without the abrasive effect. Use it full strength once a week...good luck
Reply:I brushed my teeth with baking soda for a while. But when i chipped my front tooth, i went back to toothpaste. was it because i was brushing with baking soda? i can't say for sure.
Reply:While you may not notice it, baking soda is abrasive and slowly does take enamel off. You may notice that your teeth will lose their luster or shine, they may look what flat paint would look like. This will take time of course, but baking soda is too abrasive to be using it everyday. i just graduated hygiene school so hopefully this helps.
Reply:Anything rough can be harmful to your enamel when used daily. I suggest using ACT restorative mouthwash for enamel. Baking soda also doesn't give you the protection a flouride toothpaste would against cavities... so that is something to think about. You can get baking soda in a toothpaste. My favorite is Arm and Hammer advance white. It also tastes better =)

HELP, Day care!!!!!!!!!!!!!! help?
okay I am 17 I am getting my ged as soon as I turned 18 (nxt week) Do not say anything about this... but anywho, My question is I live like not even a block away from a very good day care place. In june I will be starting college, I am getting a associate for dental hygenist, the thing is that I want a good job, while I wait until june, and go to school you know, so i was thinking about going to apply to the day care but what possitions can i work? Can I even work there? Or do I need to get a diploma or some sort? What should I ask them if i call them
HELP, Day care!!!!!!!!!!!!!! help?
there are many positions at day care- as far as i know, anyone can apply, most wont consider you unless you have passed a background check.
but if you feel you have something to offer, go ask for an application, or call and ask them what qualifications they look for. it doesn't cost anything to apply, the worst that can happen is you wont get called back, but even if that were to happen at least you tried your best.
good luck
Reply:Wait till after you have your GED, then fill out an application. It can't hurt. The application just says "do you have a hs diploma or equivalent" and you would say yes.
Why don't you just graduate, there's only a few months left? Or are you failing?
P.S. I'm telling! ha ha ha just kidding ;-)
Reply:just ask them if they are hiring and yes GED is just like a dimploma so you are ok there. They will want you to at least have some exprieance with children but if not just tellt hem that you are very patient and you are creative so you can think of fun and educational things for the children. You could be the teacher if they are a day care and not ran by the government. ONly the owner has to have a certificate not the workers but that is one thing you can ask them because i know some want the all the workers to have them and some do not. So that would be a good question to ask also.
Reply:I would go by the daycare and ask them if they are accepting applications. Take it from there. If they ask about your education, tell them you plan on taking your GED test next week.
Reply:Ask about teacher assistant or a non-degree positions. I am on the board of directors for a day care in my city. We do hire high schoolers or college students however each center is different. Call and ask the director what postions are open or opening. Usually they need extra help in the summer month when schools out and more children attending full time.
Good luck!
Reply:Each state has requirements for the OPERATOR of a daycare (meaning the owner), but while specialized education is helpful for consideration of an employee, it's not absolutely essential. Each company will set its own standards.
As an aside (I know, you said you didn't want to hear it), a GED is NOT as good as a diploma. With a diploma comes transcripts that shows not just your score, but your track record. As the last Super Bowl showed, ANYTHING can happen just once. I'm surprised that even a community college has accepted you with only a GED, and especially since you don't even have THAT yet.
Still, go ahead and apply now for the daycare if that's what you want. When asked about the GED, at least you can say that you ARE in process of taking it, not that you PLAN to do it someday. (If you really ARE currently in process for it.)

I need help with picking the right course to take?
i'm at a community college and i need to pick my classes to take. i want to become an orthodontist. they offer only dental assistants and dental hygenist. which will gear me towards my field?
I need help with picking the right course to take?
You should get some help from a pre-health counselor for specifics. But for you to be an orthodontist, you have to go to dental school first. And before you go to dental school, you have to have a bachelor's degree or at least take the required classes.
I would recommend that you focus on classes that A) are general ed classes that will go towards transferring to a 4 year school and B) classes that are required to get into dental school (I would imagine things like calculus, chemistry, biology, etc. - ask your counselor!).
Dental assistant and dental hygeinist programs are geared towards getting people trained to work in those professions. They are not geared toward getting into dental school, and I would imagine much of the coursework is not transferrable to a 4 year college. If you want to work with teeth, but don't want to spend several years in school, or are better at hands-on classes than traditional academic subjects, this might be better for you than trying to be an orthodontist. However, neither program is the path to dental school.
Reply:A dental assistant is closest because you assist an orthodontist. The other cleans teeth, and I have never seen one in an orthodontists office.
Reply:well choose the course which the subjects are also affliated in the orthodontist dont waste time choosing a course which will be of no help in your future career..time is gold and gold is money

Would you be interested in this?
I want to know how many people think they are paying to much for insurance. What if you could join a plan for $39 a month? would you do it? I am just taking a survey. The plan would include office visits for $10. you would see a Nurse practioner for most cases. You would also get certain prescriptions for a $10 copay as well filled within the same retail location. I am even thinking about throwing in a dental hygenist for emergency situations and maybe a couple free dental cleanings a year with your plan. There would be no major hospital coverage or emergency surgery services for this price but you would have most of your minor medical complications covered. Allergies to Colds, Flu, Strep tests, STD tests and treatments, pain relief, sprains, strains. Mostly what an urgent care facility would treat. And if you did not join the plan the out of pocket expense would be around $59 per visit. Now tell me who would be in on this? any info will help with my initial interest survey. thanks!

It sounds like a good plan, but I'm english and therefore dont really know how much your average pay of insurance is anyway.
Reply:right now for both my husband and i on his insurance we are paying aroung 117 every two weeks. he does have crappy insurance, but we need it. i would love to have good insurance that wasn't expensive.
Reply:I don't think I would be interested because I buy insurance to protect myself in case of a major medical calamity in my family. I would rather pay out-of-pocket for the treatments you described.
Still, it might be marketable to people who cannot save for minor medical attention and want to put a little aside each month. But in that case, there would be more incentive if they could have it excluded from their income before being taxed.
Reply:Sounds like a sales pitch to me...

Is it ok for a person to start chemotherapy if they have bad tooth aches?
My daughter will be starting chemo tomorrow for breast cancer treatment. She was suppose to have started chemo two weeks ago, but her oncologist delayed her treatment for another 2 weeks because she has tooth aches on the whole left side of her mouth from eating alot of sweets. Her oncologist said that if she starts chemo while she is having tooth aches it can be life threating and can cause her an infection. I would like to know is this true because it doesn't make any sense at all to me? I don't see what does her tooth have to do with her starting chemotherapy treatment. My daughter needs $1338 dollars right now for all the dental work that she needs done and unfornately, her assurance does not cover the cost. Dentist said that she needs to get in to see a dental hygenist right away, but like I said she can't afford it. Can chemo life threating if she doesn't have a teeth treated right away? And serious answers only please.
Is it ok for a person to start chemotherapy if they have bad tooth aches?
Chemo weakens your immune system. If your daughter has any abscess (infections at the root of the teeth) on any of those teeth causing her issues, that infection could spread like wildfire.
If the abscesses get out of control--which can happen within hours--the infection can enter her bloodstream and kill her. It is a very serious matter.
She should at least go to a free dental clinic and be x-rayed and examined. Otherwise, the life-saving chemotherapy she is about to begin may actually help end her life.
Reply:my mom's going thru chemo. i feel for you!
maybe if her tooth/teeth are infected now...it could be harmful, because chemo knocks out your white count %26amp; you're WAY more sucseptible to infections. That's the only thing i can think of myself.
good luck to both of you. it's really hard to watch someone you love go thru chemo.
Hugs!

I need help with college?
I want to go to college for two years. I am only in the nine grade but I need to know what I am going to do so I can take the right classes. I already know Dental Assistant, Dental Hygenist, and Nurse. Do you know of any others? Please help me. I only want to go to school for two or three years.
I need help with college?

How can I stop my 2 year old from hitting other people?
Hi I need help my 2 year old son when we went to the dentist kept hitting the dental hygenist she wasnt very understanding even though i corrected my son for his bad behavior she didnt realize he was only 2 since he towers over most 4 year olds i had to tell her and he wasnt the one being seen my daughter his twin was and the hygenist seemed to pay more attention to my son then her,but anyway
I was angry and embaressed I spank ,talk to and give the time out it all depends on the problem of which punishment is needed so is there anyone who can give me advice to stop this so it doesnt happen again?
oh and there was no option for a baby sitter I had 2 people lined up and they both called at the last minute and said they couldnt
How can I stop my 2 year old from hitting other people?
DEAR REEDY WE HAVE ALL BEEN THERE BY ALL I MEAN ACTUAL PARENTS OF CHIDREN... MY BEST ADVICE TO YOU IS LOVE YOUR CHILDREN DON'T BE EMBARESSED BY THEM.. YOU DIDN'T DO IT THEY DID THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THERE OWN BEHAVIOR BABY'S LIKE YOUR SON NEED TO BE KEPT OCCUPIED ALL THE TIME NO1. TAKE YOUR STROLLER INTO THE DOCTORS OR DENTIST WITH YOU TAKE SNACKS SMALL TOYS ANYTHING TO KEEP HIM OCCUPIED OH YES AND I KNOW SOME OFFICES SAY NO SNACKS!!!!!!! THOSE ARE THE OFFICES I WOULD TURN MY SON LOSE IN....LOL I NO HOW FRUSTRAED YOU ARE BUT REMEMBER THEY ARE ONLY SMALL FOR SUCH A SHORT TIME. THESE ARE YOUR MEMORIES... YOU MAY CRY NOW!! BUT LATER ITS ALL YOU HAVE .. YOU MUST HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR OR YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS BEING A PARENT.... DISAPLINE WITH LOVE A FIRM HAND AND ABOVE ALL ELSE CONSISTINCY REMBER NO MEANS NO !
Reply:is terrible 2 talk to him and give time out when he hit somebody
Reply:take him to see a doctor.
Reply:Very good question! My two year old son hits a lot too. He also has been doing 'kung fu' at his friends for quite some time. I'm not sure where he picked it up, but it's scares them and they cry. This is what we are doing about it (it seems to have slowed him down a bit.)
Any time he hits (or pretends to be hitting) another living being he goes into a time out. He must sit in the corner for two minutes. At home I have a hand towel that is his designated 'naughty place', but at preschool he just sits in a corner. We pretend to ignore him, but if he scoots off his 'naughty place' then we put him back and the two minutes starts over. When he has successfully sat still for two minutes I tell him he did a good job and then we hug and talk about being kind and loving.
Some kids don't understand the reason for time outs until they are three, but he is two and a half and gets it.
At home he has things he is allowed to hit (inflatable toy punching bag, etc) and kick, but at preschool hitting is just unacceptable, as there are twelve other twos in his classroom.
Of course, the best way to stop kids from hitting is to notice when they are most likely to behave badly and keep them out of that environment. Some kids spaz out with sugar and stuff like that. My son is insufferable when he doesn't get enough sleep. So I put him to bed early enough to get nine hours at night and he naps for about 2 hours every day. (Most kids need 12 to 14 hours of sleep, but he will only sleep that much if he is sick.)
I am going to star this question and check back to look at the other answers.
Reply:By hitting him, you're teaching him that hitting people is appropriate.
Stop hitting him.
Give him time-outs.
Just keep at it. It will take time.
Once he hit the hygenist, you should have kept him away from her.
Reply:stop spanking him you are teaching him it is OK to hit other. try time out or talking to him and explaining what he is doing is wrong and how it makes him feel when someone hits him.
Reply:Why should she be understanding when she has a giant 2 year old hitting her while his mother stares on and doesn't do anything? I would be infuriated as well.
Why don't you try a little discipline and get that kid under control.
Reply:I have a two year old son who has started hitting too. One peice of advice I have is that spanking isn't going to work. I caught myself doing that once with my son, and realized that spanking him was just teaching him that the behavior he was exhibiting was OK. And it's not okay.
I believe that time out is the way to go. I also take my son by the hands and say to him "Hitting is not okay. Do you want [soandso] to get an owie? Hitting causes owies." Sometimes it works, and sometimes not. But when I put into perspective for him that he's hurting someone, I think it helps him realize that it isn't okay to do what he's doing.
2yr olds are at the age where they are all action, never thinking of the consequences of their behavior. Consistence is key. Anyone who tells you to just get a hold of your child doesn't obviously have any children of their own, and has no right to comment on something they know nothing about. Obviously you are concerned, otherwise you wouldn't have sought out help. Just be consistent with him that is my best advice.

I want to become a dentist....?
I want to become a dentist. Im in my senior year of highschool. Next year I am going to dental school. Give me some tips for dental school and the actual career please!
Also, I have perfect teeth, the only work I have ever had done was braces. What does a cavity feel like? Does the drill hurt? What does it feel like?
Do people respect dentists?
Should I be a dentist or dental hygenist?
I want to become a dentist....?
You can make a very good income as a hygienist with very little debt from education, as this is a 2 or 3 year program in most places. Some give it as a 4 year degree program, though. You can not choose a career based onincome, though, so you have to decide if you want the "sameness" of dental hygiene every day or if you want the variety that practicing dentistry offers. Personally, I love general dentistry. Most people would think it's just teeth, teeth and more teeth, but there are so many different things we DO with teeth that keeps it interesting.
Start by going to a good college so you will have a better chance of admission to a dental school. Dental schools are becoming harder and harder to get into, so a good college helps.
It helps to look into the requirements for admission to a dental school and work backwards. This will help you choose your college major and it might even help you choose your college. Typically, it is easier to match up the requirements for dental school admission with the requirements of a science major and biology seems to be the closest match. You could be a history major if you wanted to be, but then all of your electives would probably be used up trying to take courses required for dental school admission.
Typically, you graduate from college with a bachelor's degree and then start dental school, which is a whole separate entity from college. Some colleges offer combined programs where the really bright and focused student might be able to combine some credits and actually enter dental school before receiving the undergraduate degree. Obviously, you would have to know this well in advance, as it might even determine where you apply to college. You do not have to disclose this intention as you are applying to the college, but you need to look into the program almost immediately, because it will determine quite a bit about what courses you need to take as soon as possible in college.
I dare say that most people respect dentists. We are always rated well in those polls of "most respected professionals" in US News and so on. Us and undertakers.
Reply:As far as being a dentist or dental hygenist...go for the dentist position. That is an actual doctorate and a much more respected position. However, if you are looking to get out of school quickly and start your profession, becoming a dental hygenist is much quicker.
As to your question about dentists being respected, not as much as you'd think. Even though they have doctoral degrees, most people don't view them as doctors.
Reply:Dental school is rather difficult, sort of like medical school. There is a lot of terminology and challenging work.
I have had a cavity drilled and they really don't hurt that much, they are more uncomfortable than anything.
I personally respect 'good' dentists and I believe people overall think of dentists like they think of physicians.
If you don't want to go through all of the schooling you should be a dental hygienist. The dental hygienist program is only about a year to a year and a half to get trained. However, dental school is much longer and intensive.
Reply:yea.. dentists are cool.. they help me get my teeth in shape and clean.. some of d tools use r abit pain n has a tingling sensation on d teeth.. either way, a dentist ot a dental hygenist is a good job to pursue!

Reply:Not all people respect dentists. Iforone do not. Some do unnecessary work and charge ridiculous prices. Then they complain about the cost of tuition, setting up a practice., staff salaries, supplies, rent. Do your homework first and see if you want this debt. It is alot of schooling and study,. If you do become one, be a good compassionate, understanding and listen to what your patients are saying to you. Many cry poor mouth, but that is not true.
Be a salesperson, most dentiists are that today, trying to push

Should getting your teeth cleaned be an unpleasant experience?
Recently I purchased health and dental insurance and began going to the dentist for regular visits for the first time in thirty years. I just got back from the dentist and getting my teeth cleaned was unpleasant. The dental hygenist didn't make any effort to explain what she was doing, didn't say anything to me at all except "Turn this way, please." She inserted this morotized dental pick into my mouth (WTF? We didn't have anything like that when I was kid). I kept expecting her to hit a nerve and I tensed up and got ready to slap it out of her hand. After a while she switched to the manual pick and attacked my mouth like she was personally angry, either at me or at the dental plaque, I wasn't sure which. Afterwards there was substantial gum bleeding and my whole mouth felt sore.
Should getting your teeth cleaned be an unpleasant experience?
Some hygienists are more aggressive than others, that's for sure...
The 'motorized pick' is called a Cavitron, or ultrasonic scaler... it's more effective (and faster) than doing the 'scraping' manually....
Her 'bedside' manner needs to improve... patients, like yourself, won't want to be seen by her, so she may lose business for the dentist... and eventually get fired.
You can certainly request a different hygienist the next time you go in for your checkup. If there isn't one available, voice your concerns to the dentist when he does your exam. I'm sure you aren't the only person who feels this way, so maybe the problem will be addressed and she'll have better 'manners'.
If you bleed that much at 6 month checkups, why not go every 3 or 4 months for cleanings until your oral health improves?
Arm %26amp; Hammer is a brand of toothpaste, like Crest and Colgate... it can't hurt.
Best of luck to you!
Reply:ask for a different hygenist next time. no, it shouldnt hurt. many people request a certain hygenist for this reason.
Reply:yes it is unpleasant and the technology has improved...the hygenist is aggressive for sure....but thats here job...and then there is your stress related addivitives...as for the bleeding that is normal too since all that gunk was causing actual gum disease...
to cut back on all this brush after every meal even if just a candy bar...floss...and use arm %26amp; hammer twice or more times a week..this scrub willl really kick the gunk off the teeth that the tooth paste misses....or just go for the gold and arm %26amp; hammer every time...its cheaper, lasts longer, and really gets the job done....then next time its in for the cleaning YOU will pleasantly rewarded....

Which career should I choose?
dental hygenist or RN??? I wanted to be RN but they work alot of hours and they have to know alot of chemistry....that's why I'm leaning towards dental hygenist...what do they have to take??

You should never not do something because of the work load. if it's your passion that shouldn't matter.

my mother is in RN and it's real hard work

Reply:Well Dental Hygiene is a very competitive field. If you have to have really good grades. I tried to apply and most Dental Hygiene programs accept applications once a year and normally have 100 or so people apply and depending on how big the program is they accept 50. It is a great field to be in because most hygienist work 4 days a week and make good money!
Anatomy 1 %26amp; 2 Chemistry is a few of them just check out the local colleges in your area. There are classes you can take before you apply for the program so you can be a head of the curve

Need your opinion, i have no idea what to do ....is this right?
Hello every one I am 17 and I am a senior but even if i pass all my credits this year I would have to go back to high school for one semester next school year to have 22 credits, but see the I was thinking since this upcoming Frebruary I turn 18 would it be fine if I droped out of high schoool adn go get my GED as soon as i turned 18? apply for financial aid and start collefe the summer of 2008 college and get into a appentice? I really would love to be a dental hygenist, and that is what I am going to go to school for, can any one give me tehre opinion about this? am I better og getting my GED or staying in school until next year and complete my 22 credits? I want to do the right thing, would i still get a really good dental hygenist career having a GED? i need help be nice and tell me what you recomend
Need your opinion, i have no idea what to do ....is this right?
Don't get a GED. Even though it is supposed to be equivalent to a High School diploma, many employers don't think so.
If you can't spent another semester in school, consider taking distance courses to finish High School. Many states offer correspondence/distance courses.
Reply:I recommend going back to high school and getting the diploma. It is unfortunate, but the world frowns upon GEDs and it would be a scar on your record for anything you choose to do later in life. No one will even notice if you took an extra semester for high school ... the important thing is to get the diploma and try to get the best grades possible.
Best wishes.
Reply:Apples and oranges, either one will work. You're probably better off getting your diploma if your going into a trade. Smart girl, Dental Hygienist make the big bucks.
Reply:I honestly think that you should stay in high school and earn your 22 credits. It's not worth dropping out when your almost done! Plus a high school diploma is worth so much more than just a GED. Just hang in there and it will go by fast and you will be able to start college before you know it. I wish you the best of luck!
Reply:the best i have heard from friends and parents is NOT to take the GED. When colleges see that you took the GED they are going to think you screwed up somewhere and weren't smart enough,s o you took it. My friends dad is a professor and he knows allot about the GED. I also asked him if i should take it and he said no, because it screws up your file. Especially for a career like dental hygienist, i recommend you to take one more semester in highs chool and get that over with.

Becoming a Dentist?
Well I am a 10th grader and my grades are 90 and above. I am trying to keep my grades very high because I want to become a dentist. I don't want to be a dental hygenist because I prefer to be a dentist.
Well today at carreer day, I got to meet a dental hygenist and she told me it was a very competetive field. She also told me the only top 2% of the dentistry class get to become a dentist outta the rest of the students in the class. That is a very narrowing field to go in and she told me peopel end up changing their majors because of this.
I want to know how hard is it to become a dentist? Did you experiance this narrowing proccess to get your dream job you have today as a dentist.
Also she said she only works 40 hours a week and gets paid around 60,000. SHe said she loves the time and pay of her job. Also I wanted to know how many hours does the dentist work?
Becoming a Dentist?
Getting into dental school is not easy. She is right they only accept about 2% of those that apply, ok maybe a little more than that, but it's not very much. You need a good science background in college and job experience such as shadowing is preferable. Being rich and out of state never hurts either.
Dentists who start out will work at least 30-40 hours a week. YOu probably won't make that much money, but you'll have to work a lot. Student loans aren't cheap. When you get your own practice and get established then you can hire people to do the work and only work about 15-20 hours a week.
Reply:I am not in that professional field. But I can tell you that you should keep your dream. Dentists are needed all over the world. There is a shortage of very good dentist. What you need to do is not just to become a dentist but specialize in a particular part of dentistry. e.g re-creative work. I don't agree with the dental assistant. There is great need for that profession. Go for the Gold. I hope a true dentist answer your query and encourage you not to give up.
Reply:Go for the gold! Be a dentist. You will have a path to being your own boss. My niece just became a dentist and she didn't have the type of grades you have! She ended up going to a very prestigious dental school too. I would really recommend trying to meet some dentists and get their advice on how to get into dental school! The recommendations of actual dentists help you get in along with good grades. You might also try to take some classes in business and finance since eventually you'll want to be on your own and this is something that all too often isn't addressed in dental school! If you are willing to move to a state that has fewer dentists you can get your loans paid off in no time at all if you are careful.
There is no doubt that dental hygiene is a good career but you'll never be your own boss, no one will ever call you doctor, and you'll not be able to rake in the profits that a dentist gets.
Reply:Don't become discouraged. Get real world advice from a young dentist. The dentistry field has changed from when I was a young patient. In the old days, dentists seem to be mostly concerned in filling teeth as a way to make a living. My dentist would have a number of chairs working at the same time to maximize profits. This guy had an antique Rolls-Royce parked out front. My new dentist is young and very concerned in the care and art of dental care. Keep up your grades to become a great dentist and not a "hack".

Surprisingly, prior to the early 90's, getting into dental school wasn't too difficult (as far as I know). Nowadays, getting into dental school is very tough. It's almost as competive as getting into medical school.
In terms of numbers, realistically, a 3.3 and a 19 will make your application competitive, but not strong.
As for dental school, it's miserably hard. And unlike medical schools, they are more than happy to fail people out.
Dentists typically work 4 to 4.5 days a week. Despite the potential for earning a lot of money without having to deal with many of the hassles from which physicians suffer, the work a dentist does can be frustrating at times--almost always because of patients. In fact, I'd say that the nature of the work offsets the easy work hours and significant pay.

You CANT practice as a Hygienist without a License. So yes, you'll have to take the test and then get Registered in whatever state you decide to live in. Different states have different test. You cant take the California Board, and practice in New York, for example. Each state has their own testing.
Reply:thank gil Report It
Reply:Once you decide which state to live in you should contact their board of dentistry to see what their rules are. Each state has different laws. You will probably have to take some sort of registration test, most likely both written and clinical.
Reply:You would have to take the US National Boards which are written, and in the state you plan to practice in, you would have to take clinical state or regional boards. You can probably get more information on the website of the American Dental Hygienists' Association: http://www.adha.org/ I'm a dental hygienist, but it's been years since I took the tests so check the website.
Just for fun, here are some dental offices we've visited in our travels: http://www.mousetourstravels.com/dental-...

AS A POTENTIAL HYGIENIST IN THE US YOU MAY EXPECT TO BE PAID FROM $28-40, DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU PRACTICE.

Questions on dentistry?
is it possible to obtain a general D.D.S in under 8 years? i'm not talking specializing, just general. if so how is that possible and what schools are good for that??????...also... if i become a dental hygenist (4 years of undergrad) is it easy/even possible to go to dental school after i get the degree in dental hygene to become a general dentist?? i would think it would be easy to make that transaction, considering the fact that a hygenist is halfway there to becoming a dentist- but i am not 100% sure. or do you have to stick to the undergrad degree in a science like chemistry or biology??
Questions on dentistry?
You can get a dental hygiene degree in 2 years at many schools. Then take one year to get your dental pre-reqs done. Then 4 years of dental school. So, a total of 7 years. However, this is difficult to do. Hygiene school does not help you get into dental school, won't hurt though, and not having a bachelors degree will hurt.
Better to got to a 4 year undergrad program, any major will work, but must do a year of chem, physics and biology but that can easily be worked in. The dental school for 4 years. You can practice right after graduating.
Reply:1st question-Yes. You will have to take more classes than recommended and summer school. It would be lots of work but it is possible. I guess any school would be fine. You would have to jump ahead in undergrad, I don't think you can skip ahead in dental school
2nd question-It is possible to go to dental school after earning a degree in dental hygiene. Hygiene school took exactly 3 years, no shortcuts. It would look really good on your dental school applications to have that much experience in the dental field already.
3rd question-You still have to earn a BS degree in a science to get accepted into dental school. Most of the courses required to get into a dental hygiene program can go toward a BS degree in science.
You will be really busy for a while, but you can do it. Good Luck!

"Deep cleaning" by a dental hygienist?
I have braces and went today 4 a checkup. They said I need to have a 'deep cleaning' done by their hygenist because I have a gum infection cuz of plaque. We talked to them about it and she said she'll have to numb me and work on my gums. Just how serious is this? I got worried when I heard the word 'numb' cuz I hate dental procedures. I get very afraid of pain, needles, and bleeding. What should I do and has anybody been through this and explain what they do? Also, they want to charge us a pretty hefty fee: nearly 300$
"Deep cleaning" by a dental hygienist?
Sounds like gingivitis. They need to scrape your teeth under the gum line. Yes, it can hurt, but think of the alternative. Have ya' seen the people on COPS with like three teeth in their head? They didn't get the deep cleaning done when their dentist recommended it.
Reply:What are your gum measurements? They should measure the height of the space from the top of your gum to the bone. If your measurements are above 4mm than you may have gum infection/ swelling or bone destruction. Do your gums bleed? are they swollen? Do you floss regularly? You have to floss even though it is a pain with braces. Gum disease left untreated can cause germs to get in your blood and cause clots to go to your brain or heart which can put you at risk for heart attack or stroke. If your measurements are below 3 mm or worse they haven't measured at all, consider another office!
Reply:How did you handel the braces procedure??
You gums needs to be numb for the deep cleaning procedure. it will be painfull if it's done without nummbing. It will be alright..you won't ffel a thing when you are numb. and you will love the results.
best of luck.
Reply:no pain should be involved and any infection should be treated 300 dollars is worth it you dont want it to get worse do you??
Reply:still going thru it. yes they numb you. done in quarters. long time with mouth open. take two advil b4 you go for pain and inflamation. i had upper right done and am waiting for dentists office to call for appointment for upper left. money is about right. they billed my insurance for all complete cleaning but i onlt have had 1/4 done. not painful during but next day plan on drinking and soup. jaws will hurt from being open so long. worst cleaning in my life-but i hadn't gone to dentist in 5 or 6 years. Remember ADVIL.. tylenol will not do the things you will need. numb you, if you feel anything let them know.numb you again(whole side they are working on) ooohhh-ask for numbing lotion for b4 needle novacain. they take instruments just like normal cleaning but they go under gums and get all the plaque off. it's not too too bad. i was numb-mouth nose and part of my lower eye area for 2 hrs after. take nap after appointment. you will not be going to work or anywhere.. best wishes and good luck. 3 days after you will love the feel of those cleaned teeth.

Today I had dental x-rays.how, once receiving the?
Today I had dental x-rays. The woman was in training(I infered). She messed up one somehow, once receiving the results. So she took one more but forgot to give me the lead apron as she did before. What should I do about this? Should I quit seeing this dentist despite the hygenist making the mistake?
Today I had dental x-rays.how, once receiving the?
Don't worry about it too much. At our dental office we do not even use a lead apron. With the speed of our film and digital radiography, you can get more radiation by going outside during the day than recieving a dental x-ray. Feel better now? =)
Reply:GET A LAYER
Reply:tell them you talked to a doctor and now you cant have kids and its all because they never covered you in the x-ray. (just joking)
try telling your dentist of the error and that you would prefer not to have another intern looking in on you or you will take your buisness elsewhere
Reply:Well I find this very interesting as I have had many single teeth x-rayed and even my whole head with a wisdom tooth they could not remove at none of these x-rays did I need a protective apron or any protection for that matter curious I guess maybe the denist x-ray machine is an antique?
Reply:Relax! The dose to your gonads when receiving dental x-rays is little to none. I think we mainly put the apron over you to make YOU feel better! The attached site has questions with answers from qualified medical personal regarding radiation exposure. This is an example of what you will find here. The question was regarding lead shielding a patient for an x-ray.
"any exposure outside of the general abdominal area results in very little exposure to the gonads. Clearly for chest, head, neck, and extremities exposures, dose reduction is not an issue."
http://hps.org/publicinformation/ate/q43...
By the way, part of the reason why medical/dental care is so expensive in the USA, is because people sue over silly stuff like this. So, don't get a lawyer....that is ridiculous!
Reply:Not that big of a deal, it happens from time to time. As long as you are not exposed to radiation day in and day out, you'll have no problems.
Reply:messing up on 1 x-ray is not a big deal. I wouldnt worry about it. The exposure you received is insignificant. Next time speak to the hygienist and tell her she made that mistake. That will pretty much guarantee that is doesnt happen again
Reply:"Get a Layer"??? What is that?
If you are truly concerned, talk to the dentist and tell them what happened. They need to address the issue with the staff.
I don't think a "layer" will help you though.
Reply:It's no big deal. You would have to be exposed to a tremendous amount of radiation to develop any side effects. Although all pregnant women should always be double aproned if she MUST have an x-ray.....But totally different from a healthy young man.
As far as changing dentists because of this....I don't know how old you are, but have you ever had a job? Do you remember when you were new and learning how things worked?
We all make mistakes, pros and novices alike. Don't sweat the small stuff.
Good question, though. I'm sure many people have wondered the same thing.
Reply:The use of lead aprons is outdated. The latest Regulations in UK and Australia have removed the need for lead aprons for all patients, INCLUDING pregnant women. It is only suggested "...for psychological reasons..." i.e. if it makes the pregnant patient feel safer. I keep one out in my back room.
Xray machines and their regulation have improved markedly since the old days, and hence the risks have dropped dramatically in the dental field. the newest machines are now digitally controlled and collimated (restricted area of emission), whereas old machines used inaccurate analog timers and sprayed radiation in all directions.
Also, there is increasing evidence that a small amount of background radiation is actually good for our cells to function at peak. This is called hormesis. Time will tell if this becomes proven.

Aspen Dental class action law suit?
Aspen Dental seems to be a scam dental business. How does a class action law suit start?
Problem: Went to Aspen Dental(in Conn.) who tried to get me to do a deep cleaning which my insurance was not going to pay for. I told them no. The hygenist then told me to come back for a 4 mo. cleaning. The CSR didn't tell me that my insurance was not going to cover it. After the 4 mo. cleaning, the same hygenist told me to come back after 4 months again, but this time the CSR stated that my cleaning may be billed to me cuz the insurance was not going to pay for it (insurance pays every 6 months only). I have complained to BBB but the Aspen Dental replied that it was my decision to do the 4 mo. cleaning. How can it be my decision if I was not disclosed of the fact that my insurance was not going to cover it? It is so sad that this company is scamming alot of people. How can a class action law suit start? Are there lawyers who will suit them? Thanks.
Aspen Dental class action law suit?
I stopped going to Aspen Dental in MA for charges that my insurance co. said they paid but I got stuck paying--supposedly the difference. My insurance co wouldn't help out, told me to talk to Aspen Dental. I got screwed out of about $150- I never went back to them. My current dentist has a lot of their former clients too. Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do. Just don't go back.
Reply:As the insured it is your responsibility to know just what your policy covers. If in doubt call your HR dept.
Reply:It is your responsibility to ask if your insurance will cover it, you know the conditions of your insurance better than they do. I have never had a problem with aspen dental, in fact I think they do a good job. For a class action law suit, you will need a lawyer before you can do anything

DR. SAM can you let me know if dental is my calling how did you know?
DR. SAM why is it so hard for people to respond to you like going to your email. are you really in dental I am I've been a hygenist for 8yrs . At first I wanted to do pediactris I just love children until I realized that I was just to emotional for children. It was'nt about the money I loved to see that million dollar smile. but I think I now have the courage to go back and do it this time I love the smell of the practice when I'm at work I get this burst of energy that I can never explain but I think I found my calling in surgical I love the extractions and surgery I can do it all day long does that make me weird because I like doing sooches. I was going to be a dentisit and stopped after 2 yrs because I was chicken
DR. SAM can you let me know if dental is my calling how did you know?
I just tried to respond to you using Yahoo! mail link, but it said, "Oops! We were not able to send..." You can e-mail Huskymom via Yahoo! and she can give you my e-mail address. Just tell her to look for this message so she knows it's okay with me.
I had to disable my e-mail link because I was getting 10 to 20 private e-mails every day from people who should have just asked their question in public on Yahoo! They would get several opinions that way and not just mine. I never wanted to short-change anyone, but 10-20 e-mails a day was too much. I still work! Then, there were a couple of whackos who just would not understand that the best choice for them and their infection was to see a dentist and they didn't want to hear my advice, so they got nasty. I don't need that either.
If you have worked for hygiene for 8 years and want to be a dentist, I'd say that YOU know more about this decision than anyone else in the world. You have certainly had enough exposure to understand what the career is all about. I really enjoy surgery, as well. Dental School can be tough, but with your knowledge, you already have a leg up on most of your future classmates.
I'm glad to see you say that it's not about the money. No amount of money can offset the pain of being stuck in a career you do not enjoy. There are more kinds of "income" than financial anyway.
It sounds like it is time for you to "just do it!"

Dental assistants?
Is it a good job?
Do you like doing it?
Is it really a good transition into hygenist?
Non-dental assistants ... if someone tells you they are a dental assistant do you consider it to be a respectful job or do you look down on them?
Dental assistants?
I am a dental hygiene student - being an assistant first can help you with the terminology, but that is about it, they do different things (a dental hygienist can do anything an assistant can do, but not vice versa). Of course, a dental hygienist makes very good money!! But I believe an assistant makes around 12-15 an hour, which also is not bad.
I think being an assistant is respectable--certainly more so than working at Burger king (no offense to anyone working there).
Good luck with whatever you do!!
Reply:i want to be one when i get older. my step sister in law is in school to become one, so i would say that it is pretty good.....
Reply:A dental assistant doesn't earn as much as a hygienist, but it's still a respectable job, because they are in as much contact with the patient as the dentist. If you are already an assistant, and want to earn more, then you should consider going on the hygienists course.

If u were 44 & single & goin back to school - do u thk nursin, dental hygienist, or teacher wld be best choice
If u were 44 %26amp; single going back to college - do you think nursing, dental hygenist, or teacher would be the best choice and why?

Largest demand is in nursing.

Teaching is a 4 year degree so would probably be the longest schooling.
I know there's a major demand for all esp teaching %26amp; nursing %26amp; you could go anywhere. Nurses can actually make lots of money. I have a friend that is an ER nurse %26amp; contracts out to different hospitals. She loves it!

Reply:Yeah, because in those fields espically medical there are a high demand for those positions. so no matter what,do not worrie about everyones opinon just go back to school for yourself and not for anybody else. a person is never to old to go back to school.
Reply:I'd go with dental hygienist or other work as an aide or assistant in the medical field. You can qualify for many of these jobs with a 2-yr Associate's degree.
Nursing and teaching, however, require four-year programs (at least!). If I wasn't really feeling passionate about a particular field, 4 years of college might be too much money and too much studying.
Good luck!
Reply:I've been in your position. My pick of the 3 options you mention would be dental hygiene. It can be done with a 2 year program, and once you begin practicing, the hours are much better than nursing. My hygienist makes $50/hr and works her own hours. You can't do that as a nurse unless you work home health, where you would have a pile of paperwork to complete every day. Teaching is even worse, and takes longer; a 4 year degree and a year of student teaching for being underpaid and overworked? No, thanks!

I can't decide whether I want to become a dental hygienist or a nurse!?
I like the possibilities of both! Can someone give me some pros and cons of your job? I originally wanted to do nursing, but it seems like a much more difficult career than a dental hygenist and they make about the same amount of money a year! Please help me!!
I can't decide whether I want to become a dental hygienist or a nurse!?
I am a dental hygienist! I LOVE IT! The pay is great, out of school in Boston area is paying around $40 an hour. The reasons why I love my job is because it is flexible (working hourly can help if you choose to have a family), I established many relationships with my patients due to seeing them on a recall system, many patients come 3-4 months to get their teeth cleaned and it is always nice to see how their life is going. It is nice to be a part of that. Most importantly, the decision for me to do hygiene vs. nursing was that I was too sensitive of a person, I didn't think I could deal well with death or not being able to help someone. With hygiene, it is difficult with certain cases, but if you have compliance with your patients then you can really make a difference. More and more research is showing direct systemic links to gum disease (heart disease is related to gum disease etc) so this is a nice part of our job that we still do deal with medical aspects. The door for moving up is also a possible, you can teach, you can work as a consultant, work in marketing, public health, nursing homes, shelters and community clinics are also employment opportunities that can broaden your scope of interests. THis may be a great choice for you where as you have an interest in both medical and dental, you can be a hands on part of treatments.
THe cons I think in both fields is repetive motion injuries, many nurses and hygienist face spine problems and carpel tunnel, so this is something to think about for both.
Hygiene school was difficult and competitive but well worth it. I like that I work Monday thru Friday, 8:30-5:00 I have my own room, my own patients, my boss is great and treats me well, I have free will as to what is best for my patients without having a boss breathing down my neck. I don't have to worry about working holidays or weekends or nights like many nurses do as well as I don't have a problem taking time off, where as many nurses need to get coverage for this to happen. I have much respect for nursing as a profession, but I am listing what made up my mind to choose hygiene over nursing.
Good luck, I hope this helps!
Reply:Nursing degree is alot harder.
Reply:My experience is in Nursing. If you want to go up in rank and become a manager in nursing, it's a lot different than becoming a nurse because you want tohelp people. Today, the nurse has less and less contact with patients and more and more 'paperwork', albiet the computers used. I worked critical care for 10 years, then switched to Mental Health. In both cases, I just wanted to be a NURSE, not a boss and it didn't boad well with superiors. They all think everyone wants to climb to the top. Some of us nurses just want to be there for the patients. And there are a LOT of things you'll have to do as a nurse that may make you squeamish. Why not see if you can spend a day with a working nurse at her job before you decide. It's a BIG decision. Good luck.
Reply:Hi, I recommend being a Nurse because you will have endless options for your career and Happiness. A flexible schedule, different pay scales, different environments to work and so on. I may be a bit partial because I have worked in the Healthcare/ Marketing Business for almost 15 years. I worked mostly with Nurse recruitment and placement. I worked both on site of Facilities and many years at the agency end. I paid LPN's an hourly rate of $32.00 per hr. IN NJ and PA though.
Anyway, I am sick and tired of corporate politics and corruptness, so at the age of 43 I have registered for LPN school. It will only take 11 1/2 mos. to become an LPN, or LVN, I really don't have a desire to become an RN at this point in life. The options are endless though and we need Nurses in this Country. I think it would also be easier to find employment as a Nurse. My Opinion, but based on a career in the Nurse Staffing Business.
Best of luck with your career endeavors!!
Be a Nurse if it is only in your heart, not for the money. There's too many Nurses in the field w/a bad attitude of it just being a job. Being a Nurse can be a very rewarding career personally. It can make you feel like... hey I did something good today. I made someones life better.
Reply:if you have a dentist you should visit the office and ask the nurses questions and maybe they can give you tour. Talk to someone at a local college about the differences.

Has anyone gone to western career college for the dental hygiene program?
if so how long did it take and how soon after did you get a job, if at all... and how much does a dental hygenist make an hour/year? thank you
Has anyone gone to western career college for the dental hygiene program?
No, but I am looking at a school by where I live for dental hygiene.
If you have all the general/prerequisites out of the way 2 years. Some programs require that you have all the science classes done before you apply.
Most of the people that I know that have graduated had job offers before they were done. Dental hygienists are in great demand here. They try to sign people ASAP.
As for the average pay in my area most make about $60,000-65,000 per year or somewhere in the neighborhood of between $28-31 per hour for full time.
Hope this helps.

How long have you had to wait to get dental work done?
I have had to wait over 6 wks now. My dentist who is the only one in the surgery I may add qualified for sedation was on hols then I had to go on hols. I had to see a dental hygenist so I have 1 more appt with her and I won't get the actual work done 3 fillings and an extraction until the end of Aug. When it becomes too painful I'm taking 500mg co codamol and once they wear off I am feeeling shaky and sweaty uuuurgh!
How long have you had to wait to get dental work done?
If you're in pain go to another surgery.
Reply:Tell your dentist and follow there advice.
Reply:You should try calling and speaking with the Dentist. Normally when there is an emergency the Dentist would make exceptions. Emergency means your having pain! Try calling and speaking with him/her. Be persistant!
Reply:Sometimes the hygenist work is very important to prep the teeth and ensure satisfactory treatment. If you are having an extraction the dentist needs everything to be sound before he will do it and for fillings a good base to work with, ie your teeth in as good shape as they can be. Give them a call and explain about the pain, sometimes it can be plaque build up and the removal, that causes sensitivity. Persevere with the regime the hygenist has advised and ask if there is anything else for the pain. If you are really disatisfied you could try looking for another dentist but in the UK if it's NHS, that can be easier said than done. Try some toothpaste for sensitive teeth in the meantime, it may help.

I am Currently a student wondering about how long it takes to do something in the Dental Field??
Well like i said I am a student, and i was wondering how many years does it take to become a dentist, and if i do decide on the dental route could i first become a dental hygenist and then become a dentist would it be easier??? and also how many years would it take going that route..........I know you have to go to dental school but would you have to go for all 4 years......Please no rude answers...it is a s8 forward question and i just need some information about this
I am Currently a student wondering about how long it takes to do something in the Dental Field??
Yes it would be easier to become a hygienist and then move to dentist position but you would still have to go the same amount of time but this way you can get your foot in the door ,get some experience and a lot of times your employer will help pay to further your education.
Reply:actually it would not be easier to become a hygienist first. dental hygiene does not have all of the same undergraduate requirements that dental school does. if you became a hygienist first, you would have to go back to college for at least another year to take physics, calculus, and organic chemistry. then you could get accepted to dental school and it would still be a 4 year degree.
it would be a much better use of time to go straight to dental school for these reasons.

How can i make sure that my dental crowns properly fit so i don't have to go back to this dentist?
this will be the 4th time i have to go in for crowns. he never checks to see if they fit properly, but he just cements them in and removes the excess cement. after going back in for odor problems, the dental hygenist took x rays and saw that there was an open margin even though he had looked at the x ray and failed to diagnose this. i went to another dentist and she told me to get him to temporarily cemented it in. will this work if something if she finds something wrong with the crowns? is still liable to fix the problem even if i go to someone else to make sure that they are done right? i don't really want to pay someone else to double check his work, so is there something that i can do to make sure things are right. after this is all over i plan on never going back to him again. also i ran my fingernail with a little pressure along the crown with the open margin and i felt it pop loose a little, is that normal?

If the crown is lose, it will fall off. Check to see if your own tooth is shaky?
Reply:I would find another dentist. It seems like he is doing a half *** job. A corwn should not feel loose. It should look and feel like a normal tooth. I can't even tell that I have a crown in my mouth. I am able to eat whatever I want, whenever I want. Now, I understand that you do not want to pay another person to check this idiots work (I did not have insurance when I got my crown. So I know how expensive it can be) but you should really go to another dentest asap.

I am thinking about Dental Hygiene school, how difficult is it?
I am 27 years old and am considering going back to school but I am also going to have to work because I have a family. I have always been interested in this field. I am not going to be able to get financial aid because I am married and the combined incomes are too much,so I will have to take out student loans. I am scared that I will not be able to do it with a full schedule and then i will be stuck with the loans. Do you think this is something that I can do? And how difficult are the classes. I would love to hear someone's school experience who is a dental hygenist.
I am thinking about Dental Hygiene school, how difficult is it?
Hi! If you put your mind to it and want to become a hygienist badly enough, you can do it :)
It takes 2 - 3 years to finish school depending on how many prerequisites you have completed. Here are some advantages and disadvantages, if you will, of hygiene:
Starting with the disadvantages:
- Anatomy, Perio, Pathology, and Pharmacology can be difficult. There is a lot of information packed into these classes that you need to know for the national board exam and some of which you will use when practicing as a hygienist. Lots of your time will be spent studying. Once you know the words cusp of Carabelli, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans "AA", esters vs. amides, and who Mosby is, you'll be well on your way!
- Tuition and instrument expenses are expensive... remember that you will make $27-32 per hour...
- Be prepared to feel like you are on a dental version of Survivor for the first semester. It is hard. You will feel like all you do is study about teeth. If you fall behind you risk leaving. It does get better after the 1st semester of clinicals.
And some of the many advantages:
- You make tons of friends, all in the same boat as you.
- After a semester of working on your classmates, you will develop "a rapport" with your patients. Most of these patients will get to know you and continue to see you throughout your schooling. Being able to teach someone about the importance of their dental health and watching them change (usually improving!) is quite amazing. You really can make a difference in someone's life.
- In school you will know by the end of your first semester if this is the right career path for you. If you feel that it is not, then save yourself the time and money and find something else to do.
I really can go on and on. The school part is difficult. You will need support from your family and lots of it! Once you make it through school, have passed the national and local boards, and have your license in hand the career in dental hygiene is amazing.
You have many options as a hygienist, whether it be working in a general practice or a specialty practice such as pediatrics or periodontology. Some areas have more job openings than others, but hopefully you can be picky and find a dentist that you like working with... as that really makes work a happier place! Part time or full time; pay is excellent; benefits, etc. If you like to work helping people, like schedules, and can also work as a team, then this career may be for you. I recommend that you go and shadow a hygienist and a student clinic. I love being a hygienist. Hope this works out for you!
Reply:you can do it....just put your mind into it.....think about the money and how it will help you and your family
Reply:Hi I'm 29 and I'm thinking of it too. For me it'll be more difficult b/c I'll be a new immigrant before I apply for this program(I'm from China), and language is my biggest problem. I have a family too. My son is now 3 yo.
I do have a plan on it. During past 2 months I've been searching for information about it. And I remember once I saw one of the college websites say you better NOT do part time jobs during the program, otherwise you might not keep up with it. Sometimes you'd have to take some clinical courses at night. Well sometimes you have to choose. Note that you'll make more money once you graduate.
You can search answers here too. There're a lot of usful information.
Right now I'm starting with Biology. I've learned it during high school but it's long long ago, besides, now I'm starting with an ENGLISH version of textbook. lol I'll buy some other textbooks, like anatomy, pharmacology, etc., after I finish this one. My immigration process will take more than 3 years, so I don't want to waste my time. I'm saving up money too during this waiting time.
Good luck.

Flossing - Need some dental healing?
I was told to floss twice daily by a dental hygenist a few months ago, and I have done so up to know, however in the last few days the pain from flossing has become more evident than ever, at one point I could suffer through it but I cant any more, would this be because my gums need time to rest or heal?, what should I do?
Flossing - Need some dental healing?
It could be time for you to return to your hygienist for further treatment. Flossing is good but doesn't clean as well as the instruments a hygienist uses. You should also review your flossing technique with her as you may be cutting your gums by using a back and forth see/saw motion rather than an up and down motion with the floss.
The correct motion with the floss is to see/saw it through the contact - wrap it around the tooth towards the back and move it up and down the tooth from the root to the gum and ensure that you get the floss as far under the gum as is comfortable, then wrap the floss around the tooth in front and move it up and down again. By wrap I mean form a C shape tight to the tooth with the ends of the floss controlled by your first fingers or finger and thumb. The balance of the floss should be wrapped around your middle two fingers - this way it doesn't feel as if the floss is cutting off your finger tip.

this link will take you to the Butler GUM website where they show you how to floss.
Reply:Yea, your probably doing it too rough. Let your gums heal, and dont do it as hard as you were.
Reply:gums are really soft and if u floss to hard and u always bleed, the worst thing that could happen is that ur gums might recede. i mean they could shorten and its not gna be a pretty sight cuz ur teeth are gna look long. i suggest the best thing to do is gargle first with a mouthwash for a minute or so, so that the food in between ur teeth will get soft and when u start flossing ur gna notice its gna be easier to remove them stuck food. be gentle ok? i hope this helped a lot! :)

Dental Hygenists please answer?
I just finished my associates degree and was planning on getting into teaching. Now, I'm second guessing and wondering if getting a degree to be a dental hygenist would be better. If you do this job can you help me decide if I should get into it or stick with the teaching. How much money do you make? Do you get good benefits? Does the job suck? Is the schooling really hard? How long does the schooling take if you have an associates degree already? And last...How do you find a school that offers that program? I know thats alot of questions but I would appreciate any advice. Thanks!
Dental Hygenists please answer?
That's funny, I am a dental hygienist of 15 years that just got my bachelor's in hygiene so that I am able to teach! If you are thinking about a degree in hygiene you probably would need to do at least another 2 years to get your hygiene degree since you need so many hours of clinical practice prior to graduation. I love what I do as it is flexible (especially if you have a family someday), it pays well ($35.00 per hour for me), and most importantly I have a connection and positive impact on my patients lives. If you like working with people than you might enjoy it. As for benefits, I get paid days off and retirement (and I work 1 day a week) but this is not always the case, it really just depends on your employer. The program is tough and may be difficult to get into (my school had 200 applicants for 22 positions this year), but it is well worth it and goes by quickly. I would try this site to check for programs close to you - http://www.adha.org/careerinfo/dir_educa...
Please feel free to contact me for more information and good luck!

Dental or medical assistant....?
I know that later after I take one these courses i want to either be a dental hygenist or radiographer tech. but which one do you think would benifit me more in long run for the careers I want?
Dental or medical assistant....?
If I were you, I would take the one that interests you the most right now.
The reason being that the two choices you have listed are both programs that have specific training and education associated with them. While some schools mandate that you need to be a dental assistant prior to entering the dental hygiene program, other do not.
Both dental hygiene and rad tech's need the basics which can be taken on a part-time basis until you are ready to commit to a fulltime schooling regiment. Most AS medical programs require you to attend on a full-time/daytime basis. This is to ensure that you are following the states guidelines for both coursework and clinical work under supervision.
You might start out as a dental assistant and decide that you do not like it and go back to school for rad tech. Don't let your interim career choice necessarily dictate what your future educational goals will be. Your interests might change based on your experience.
I know people that have graduated from both programs that you have mentioned and some have worked as assistants prior to going to school others have not; but they all succeed.
Good Luck.
Reply:probably dental ,you can probably open your own shop.
