Taking prescribed medication (Peridex) that has alcohol in it and I am a reformed alcoholic?

I have been sober going on ten years, and it is a great feeling to be clean and sober these past ten years. Now I know sometimes foods are cooked with alcohol in it and it is burned off and I am fine with eating those foods time to time.

Just recently I started using some Peridex that my dental hygenist wants me to use for a bit here, but I noticed there is 11% alcohol in it. Now, I do realize I am using this medication for a reason and its not like Im drinking it for the effect or taste, because if that was the case I would just go down and buy a case a beer if I really wanted to do it that way. Being a reformed alcoholic and fine with things, is it okay for me to continue using this being it is for medication purposes?

Like I say, I don't live in fear and next time I can always just ask her if there is a non alcohol version of it as well if need be. Has anyone else been pondered with this issue?

Hi,

as long as you are using it as directed you will be ok. However:

There is a NON-Alcohol version available.

Talk to your DOCTOR (DDS, DMD, = Dentist) about it and your History.

The Doctor should have reviewed your Medical and Social History in detail with you, and prescribed appropriately. (not the hygienist, although he or she should have also reviewed your history and informed the Doctor)

I am assuming that the hygienist probably did not ask you any questions or consider this part of your social / medical Hx, but ultimately prescribing or medication use by patients is the responsibility of the Doctor.

Again, talk to your Doctor (DDS) in confidence about your History and concerns. Despite it being safe when used as directed, even given your history, it is SIMPLE to switch to a NON-Alcohol Version with the same benefits. This will eliminate any residual concerns you might have about using this type of product.

Take Care,

Dr. Mike (DDS)
Reply:I think as long as it doesnt make you want to get drunk then it's okay.
Reply:I have used Peridex before. I wouldn't worry to much about it. As you said you don't swallow it you just rinse with it and spit it out. Listerine has 21.6% alcohol by volume. As long as you don't have an urge to drink I think it will be OK. If you start getting the urge I would stop using it. Some one close to me has been sober for over 20 years and for the longest time she wouldn't even touch NyQuil. She will now take it if she has a really bad cold. If you are really that concerned about it you could ask your dentist if there is anything else you could use.
Reply:I being an alcoholic (recovering) myself if it has non_alcohol version I wouldn't a chance. It seems to it could absorb through. I don't know. Only we know the hell we"ve put ourself through.
Reply:I have 23 years clean and sober, if there is an alterative without alcohol, take it. Ask your Dr.
