Staining at the roots?

i went to the dentist awhile ago, and he told my dental hygenist that i had "staining at the roots"...what exactly does that mean? is it bad? ...i do on occasion get little black stains on three of my front teeth, but nothing a good cleaning and crest white strips won't cure...

Staining at the roots?
Staining could be; if you drink soda, smoke, coffee, or any other product you eat or drink that leaves stains there. This is not a cavity or a lesion, simply a discoloration of tooth structure. It can't be removed by cleaning, simply done through whitening/bleaching teeth.
