Dental hygiene?

How often do you go to the hygenist? I have regular checkups at the dentist and have not needed any work for the last 4 years. The hygienist says she wants me to go to see her every 3 months but at £50 a time I think it's a bit excessive, what do you think, surely once a year is enough if you brush and floss your teeth regularly?

I don't go to a hygienist but I do have a check up every 6 months and my dentist always does a scale and polish and he charges £35 for this, so I agree £50 is excessive, a friend of mine is in a dental plan and that covers her hygienist, check ups and work other than cosmetic and she pays £15 a month.

Reply:I'm terrible at going to the dentist, I'm always moving house and can never find a good one! My mum despairs as she was a dental nurse and bought me up to always go! I do only have one filling and must make an effort to go now I'm pregnant, if only cos its free. I do think your hygenist is a bit excessive and trying to make money out of you, going at the same time as your check up is plenty if you have no problems, don't give in to them they just want your money!
Reply:you should be going every 6 months that is the general recommendation for everyone - but if u have diabetes or a type of systemic disease 3 months could be recommended.





why go every 6 months? your hygienist gives you a prophylaxis (cleaning) which takes off any calculus (tartar) you have. if the tartar is left there, plaque sticks to it and plaque is what causes problems. also if you develop a cavity or any type of oral pathology it is very important for them to be diagnosed.

Reply:Normally, They recommend a cleaning every 6 months, however if they suspect the beginning symptoms of periodontal disease, they recommend a cleaning every 3 months until you get your dental hygiene habits under control!

Reply:Lol...I'm a Dental Assistant and I get my teeth cleaned probably once a year. I take good care of my teeth. As long as your brushing twice a day and flossing, you should be able to stretch out your visits.
