When i was at the dentist today...?

i heard my dentist mention to the hygenist that i had some "staining on the roots" ... what does that mean? is that bad? ....sometimes i'll get a black stain on some of my teeth for no apparent reason but it comes of with crest white strips or a dental cleaning, and he didn't mention anythign to me about it...so is it a bad thing or what?

When i was at the dentist today...?
It's probably nothing that you should worry about. They were probably talking about what needed more cleaning.

Do any foods help preserve teeth? What about milk?

My dental hygentist said milk was good when I asked her; but later another hygenist said it was not. Can anyone clarify please?

Do any foods help preserve teeth? What about milk?
Milk is good because of the calcium. Milk is NOT good if you leave it on your teeth. It has lactose--milk sugar--in it and it will rot your teeth if you don't rinse your mouth after you drink it.

They have found that hard cheeses--like aged cheddars--form a film on your teeth that prevent them from being sugared by anything that might be in your saliva.

Diet cokes are not much better for your teeth than regular, because it has been found that the carbonation rots teeth almost as well as sugar does. Don't brush your teeth after you drink soda (soda softens your enamel and you brush it right off). And that Lime and salt "candy" you get at convenience stores...bad, bad news for your teeth.

Preserving teeth: fluoride in your local water supply, and sealants applied at the dr.'s office.

Reply:milk and actually coacoa powder.
Reply:any calcium rich food is good for your teeth.
Reply:Milk sure will do your teeth good.
Reply:I've always heard that calcium is good for bones %26amp; teeth.
Reply:I don't know about milk, but there is a sweetener called Xylitol, a naturally occuring sweetner found in the fibers of many fruits and vegetables. According to Wikipedia, "Xylitol is a "toothfriendly" sugar. In addition to not encouraging tooth decay (by replacing dietary sugars), xylitol may actively aid in repairing minor cavities caused by dental caries. Recent research confirms a plaque-reducing effect and suggests that the compound, having some chemical properties similar to sucrose, attracts and then "starves" harmful micro-organisms, allowing the mouth to remineralize damaged teeth with less interruption."
Reply:Sure milk is a good thing. Don't over do it though. Just like anything you need to have enough but not too much. 3 8ounce servings is good enough but do not forget if you eat cheese you already had your milk.

Please always remember to brush your teeth after each meal. What rots teeth is old foods and drinks. they must be removed in order to maintain healthy teeth.

Juices are prooven to ruin your teeth more than alot of foods.
Reply:Yes milk is good for your teeth you should drink a little every day.

Pregnant and I have a question?? Please help..?

I'm 26 weeks pregnant and I had dental work done today and they put local anesthesia on me.. The hygenist said it was okay but I haven't been able to speak to my doctor so she can reassure me that it's fine.. Does someone know if it's okay or not??

Pregnant and I have a question?? Please help..?
It depends on what trimester... and after 21 weeks, I heard it's fine. My advice to you is, you should ALWAYS consult your OB first if you are not sure about something being safe before you go ahead with it. I am sure you are okay though. Call your OB and just ask him. Best Wishes and congrats! KJ
Reply:Confirm it with your doctor, but it is fine - stop worrying
Reply:WHY DIDNT YOU CALL YOUR DOCTOR FIRST?
Reply:My doctor had to call my dentist office before they would perform anything on me because I was 6 1/2 months pregnant and had to local anesthesia . I would call my doctor or a nurse at the local hospital just for reassurance

But I'm sure everything is just fine, they wouldn't have performed any work if they thought it would put the baby at risk.
Reply:Depends on what they used, but local anesthesia should be safe. Its called "local" because it only effects the area its applied to. I'd be more worried if they completely sedated you.

My wife was sedated at a dentist before she knew she was pregnant. Fortunately, everything turned out okay. :)

I'm sure you and your baby will be fine.
Reply:its fine stop worrying, it is done all the time................ but if you were so unsure b4 u did it, why didnt you speak with the doctor b4hand???
Reply:Generally speaking, dental work with local anethetic is fine during pregnancy, but it's recommended that it's done during the second trimester. And what do you know...you're still in it!

What are my options?

Ok, I am 15 years old, in grade 10, and I looking at my career options. Now my ulitmate goal is to teach English Literature at Cambridge University.

I am exploring my avenues of paying for allt aht schooling. My original plan was to becoma dental assistant, then hygenist (only 3yrs of schooling) make killer money, and put myself thourgh univerisyt that way.

Now I would like to look at my other options for making good salary on only a few years of education. I want to know so that i can figure out which courses I need to take in high school.

Just a side note* How much does a wilton instructor make?

Thank you

What are my options?
I'm only going to be brutally honest here but there is no possible way to make a lot of money coming out of college in pretty much any field. So please don't base your motivations on that. The economy is tough and pretty much extremely saturated with recent college graduates. You need to figure out what you want to do, get a University education or go to vocational school so you can be a higenist. Either choice is a good one but pick the one that you feel most passionate about, not the one you should do or the one that will theoretically make you the most money.

My advice is to go to a University and get an education right out of high school because it only gets more expensive and difficult as time goes by. If you want to teach at a University you are going to need a masters degree in that field, perhaps even a doctorate. You should begin to prepare yourself to meet college entrance requirements, taking math, science and looking into foriegn language requirements. Every university is different so make sure you look it up the exact requirements just to be sure. Even if you decided to become a hygenist you will probably be glad you took some tougher classes in high school in those areas.

If you need help paying for University look into scholarsihps, fedeal aide, grants and loans. There are many options available and many you would think you didn't qualify for.

Good luck, just be sure to take the path you are most passionate about. Its ok not to have all the answers. I'm 25 with an MBA and I still don't know what I want to do with my life, I just take it one day at a time.

By the way, I'm not sure how much an Instructor at a college makes but I'm guessing about 40-80k depending on years of experience and those who have tenure will get paid more. It also depends if you teach full time or not and what type of college you end up teaching at.

Would any of you that's able to figure out dental bills be able to tell me what this stands for? Thanks!?

I have to go for my next treatment at the dentist soon and for my cleaning they have it in two parts. The first part says: Full Mouth/Antimicro. And the second part of the cleaning is Prophy-Adul/Fluor/Excl. The hygenist told me that this is just a cleaning. I've never had to have a two part cleaning when I go in my for my cleanings before so this is something different for me. My question is, is this what they refer to as a deep cleaning? Because I heard those hurt a lot!

Would any of you that's able to figure out dental bills be able to tell me what this stands for? Thanks!?
not as much...if you are worried about the pain though you do have the option to call and ask if you could come in earlier to get numb for the procedure...i ve seen patients come into my office that do this..you could also ask for sweet air to calm anxiety..a deep cleaning is when they do one side top and bottom, polish the teeth and scale, srape off tarter, next visit they do the other side follow with a flouride rinse and may use hydrocloride to flush out gums ..hope this helps i do deep cleaning with my dentist so ive seen it done:) full mouth means cleaning of the whole mouth, adul/(adult)flour/(flouride treatment)Prophy(polishing of the teeth) ex cl exam cleaning-didnt know if you needed that explained:)-

I have always dreamed of becoming a dental hygensist. I am considering going back to college for a degree.?

I wanted to know from anyone who is a hygenist, what are the pros and cons of this job? Is the pay worth the work that you have to do? Please let me know ASAP. Thank You!!!

I'm interested int the dental hygiene program at cypress college, Do you have to work on cadavers?

Someone told me that they do that at cypress college...and I really want to become a hygenist but I couldnt even get trough disecting a frog in bio.

I'm interested int the dental hygiene program at cypress college, Do you have to work on cadavers?
Cadavers? No, I wouldn't think so. The dental hygienist program in my local area works on live humans. They run a dental clinic, and the students get some of their clinical experience through that. Other clinical experience is through local dental clinics. After looking Cypress' website regarding the program, you may have to OBSERVE anatomy of a cadaver, but i would doubt dissection. Call the school to know for sure. The link is to Cypress college dental hygiene program. Good luck!

For dentists only: questions about dental practice?

1. how many workers do you employ? what jobs?

2. how many hygenist appointments do you usually have every day?

3. how much money did you borrow to open the practice?

4. what is your take home salary after taxes?

For dentists only: questions about dental practice?
Don't look likeyou have any answers good qyestions
Reply:I could easily answer #1 and #2, but I won't since you only asked dentists.

Questions #3 and #4 are a bit invasive and I'd be surprised if anyone was comfortable answering them in a public forum.
Reply:1. Three full time, 1 part time

assistant, office manager, hygenist, part time hygenist

2. 10 with the appointment being 45 min

3. no answer

4. I'll never tell
Reply:1. I have 2 chairside assistants, 2 "front office people" and 1 hygienist.

2. The hygienist usually sees 10 people a day. Maybe more if there are a lot of children on the schedule that day.

3. I didn't borrow anything to open the practice, as I just joined an existing practice.

4. These figures are available from the ADA or even Monster.com. There is no point in getting a half dozen dentists to reveal their income to you as it would have zero statistical significance.

Have you ever heard of someone getting sick after a deep dental cleaning?

My dentist had one of the hygenist do a deep cleaning on all four quadrants of my mouth because I hadn't been in a long time and needed it. He said he wanted her to put an anti biotics cream in there afterwards because he did see signs of gum disease and I had sever bleeding. The hygenist did the cleaning but did not give me the anti biotic, she said she wanted me to come back in 2 weeks and she would do it then. Well, in 2 weeks I was sick and had to cancel my appt and reschedule it. I have a sore throat, sinuses are all backed up, my face hurts, my mouth hurts. I went to the ER and they said I have a viral infection. I didn't think about the fact that my teeth hurt and my face hurts around my mouth until this morning. A friend suggested that maybe I am sick cause infection was released from the deep cleaning and I wasn't given the anti biotic.

Have you ever heard of someone getting sick after a deep dental cleaning?
I do not intend to have you worried...but your health (maybe life) could be in danger.

The dental procedure can cause a sever infection of your blood by "Streptococcus" and be fatal eg. lead to Endocarditis.

A high dose of "Amoxicillin" would be urgent!

Pls. be careful!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amoxicillin

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streptococc...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endocarditi...
Reply:all the bacteria that they clean out from underneanth the gums can definatly get you sick with flu like symptoms. i am surprised you werent given the antibiotic first... Ps im also surprised she did all four quadrants at one time?
Reply:Not knowing your age or general health condition let me just say that given the circumstances as you described them it makes no sense what so ever that the Dentist allowed you to leave the office with out an antibiotic prescription. It's a well know fact in the health fields that any dental procedure that causes bleeding and an area of infection exists, standard procedure requires the patient to be give antibiotics...if the infection is know to exist ahead of time, antibiotics are given at least one week prior to the procedure being done. There are people in cemetery's because of such ill practices. When a person has a known or unknown serious health condition, that condition can be made fatal by release of infectious material being released directly into the blood stream through invasive dental procedures. It may be only a coincidence that you got sick following the dental procedure but failing to give you preventative medication for the infection they said you had certainly didn't help. You might consider changing who provides your dental health.
Reply:The antibiotics that the dentist would be placing is not for the purpose of preventing systemic infection, but rather for the purpose of slowing continued destruction of the periodontal tissues due to chronic periodontitis. Your viral infection is unrelated. Also the bacteria which cause periodontitis are susceptible to antibiotics, BUT they are not viruses. By definition, viruses are not affected by antibiotics.

I think the issue that the previous answerers are referring to is infective endocarditis. This could be a problem if you had a prosthetic heart valve, artificial joint, etc, ....in that case an antibiotic would be given to prevent infection, but that is a completely different scenario.

Sometimes a dentist will refer to periodontitis as "an infection". "Infection" may describe the disease process to aid the patient's understanding, but technically, an infection means that it is spreading to other parts of the body...that does not happen in same sense with periodontitis.
Reply:I had a root canal done on an abscessed tooth without being given antibiotics before or after. One week later I was sick with a fever, chills, and fainted at work. Ambulance ride to the hospital where I was diagnosed with bacteremia (bacteria in bloodstream) and a VERY serious eye infection. I was on IV antibiotics for 6 weeks and had 5 injections to my right eye to treat the infection and prevent blindness or complete loss of the eye. A heart doctor, an infectious disease specialist, four eye specialists, and a surgeon to put in the IV tube. That root canal ended up costing over $40,000 dollars....and almost cost me my life. You may have a viral infection (?) BUT..If you're still sick.....SEE A DOCTOR NOW!

Good Luck %26amp; Best Wishes

Nunbing for dental procedure?

But I WAS numb but obviously not numb enough which should not have been the case as my body mass index is obvious. On my return to complete the crown I yelled at the receptionist "take my name off your data base and don't contact me again. She's a bloody idiot". on going to a new dentist i find my teth are covered with plack as the previous hygenist hand scaled mostly.

Nunbing for dental procedure?
First, it's clear that you have no idea what you are talking about. Second, if it hurts, TELL THE DENTIST.

Lastly, as #2 stated, I'm sure they were more than happy to let you go as a patient. As a matter of fact, I can guarantee that you're on their DO NOT REAPPOINT list.
Reply:Don't worry..I told the dentist ..in no uncertain terms! I do know what I am talking about but obviously the dentist doesn't know good practise from bad. Thanks for the answers even from the funny lady who inferred I was an addict.Shame on you. Report It

Reply:... and your question????
Reply:So, yelling at a receptionist is your idea of being cool? Wow, what an impressive man!

What, if any, responsibility do you share for not telling your dentist you could feel the procedure?

In many cases, people who are substance abusers are difficult to numb. Some people lie on their health history about using drugs and the dental team doesn't have the information necessary to plan anesthetic.

The practice will not be sorry to see you go. People who yell at innocent staff members are not welcome where I work, and would not be welcome in most offices. Perhaps some anger management would be in order?
Reply:numbing has nothing to do w/ BMI, bud.

I've had guys built like linebackers who are huge and need only a tiny amount of anesthetic.

I've had little kids who need 2 full carpules.

Same goes w/ nitrous oxide. it's not a correlation.

unless your prev hygienist scaled immed before the SECOND hygienist saw the plaque on your teeth, the existing plaque on your teeth is your fault.

If you're talking about tartar or calculus however, yest, they should ahve taken it off at a recent cleaning.

Post dental cleaning thing.. gap?

I went and got my teeth cleaned and found that when my hygenist removed the plaque buildup behind my lower front teeth, I have this gap type thing where it used to be. It doesn't hurt me and my gums aren't bleeding, and my teeth aren't sensitive to hot/cold or any foods I'm eating, but I'm curious as to if there's anything I can do to relieve this temporarily or if something happens within time, like the gums grow into the gap and fill it like they normally do. It's not a huge gap, it's just where one of my teeth goes behind another one of my teeth from how they're crookedly set. Thanks in advance. :)

Post dental cleaning thing.. gap?
the tarter had filled up the gaps in between the tooth. The gum has been destroyed by the tarter. Once it is removed , gaps form, see to that the gap is maintained %26amp; do not allow food to collect again or the next time after claening more gaps will form.
Reply:if gum tissue was removed during the cleaning then most likely it will grow back. you can always go back to the dentist and ask them since on your x rays it will show where the gum was previously. you can give about a week or so to see the gum growing back
Reply:you are just not use to it it will go away

Do dental hygenists give shots??

I wanna be a hygenist, but not if they give shots!

Do dental hygenists give shots??
Here in New York State where I am, dental hygienists can be certified to give infiltration injections and administer nitrous oxide, which they routinely do when doing scaling and root planing (deep cleanings).

I don't know about other states, but I would imagine most states are also the same.
Reply:I think the dentists have to give the shots all the dentists I have been to the dentist gives the shot and all the hygenists does is prep the patient (clean your teeth and stuff like that)
Reply:I have NOT heard this...i bet under the supervision of a dentist maybe...but ask????
Reply:I've never had one from a dental hygienist. Why not ask your dentist for a job description?
Reply:my uncle is one. he does give shots. they are small one that you shoot straight into the gums around the teeth/tooth that they need to clean or put a filling into
Reply:In most states, dental hygienists can give routine injections. My hygienist is actually better at it than the doctor.
Reply:Yes, in many states now hygienists are trained and licensed to give dental injections. Hygienists many times will give an injection for deeper cleanings called root planing and scaling. I do not know that it is mandatory for a hygienist to take the course. They probably offer it as part of their curriculumn now in dental hygiene school. In the past four years, WI has become one of those states.
Reply:Dental hygienists provide preventive and corrective dental care and promote good oral hygiene and health. A typical day involves examining patients teeth and gums for disease and cavities, cleaning and polishing teeth and helping patients understand brushing and flossing techniques.

To be a dental hygienist, you must be comfortable around needles, x-ray machines and anesthetics.

In most dental offices, the dentist gives shots for filling a cavity anyway. Not to worry, though, if you do in fact have to give shots or anesthetics, be calm. You'll be doing it almost every day, so you'll definitely get used to it.

Best of luck with your career choice!
Reply:The laws governing what a hygienist can do varies from state to state. I am currently licensed in WA state and I am able to provide local anesthetic to my patients. I can give nerve blocks too, not just infiltrate. I can administer nitrous oxide, and I can place fillings (amalgam%26lt;which is the silver colored ones%26gt;and composite%26lt;tooth colored %26gt;). On the other hand I am also licensed in the state of Georgia and I am not allowed to do any of that! I would maybe start by talking to your dental hygienist and find out from her/him what the scope of practice is for your state. Who knows, maybe giving injections isn't something you'd have to do anyways! Even if you do, you'll get instruction and when you have the knowledge on how to do it, you'll be confident to do it! Dental hygiene is a great career. Best of luck to you!

Dental fees to be paid up front normal?

I have always seen either my grandfater (dentist) or the dentist my mother has worked for (she's a hygenist), but now I live far enough away that I have to find my own dentist.

So after much procrastinating, and now with some pain I go see a dentist. My 22 year old fillings are failing and I need a couple of crowns. I don't have any issue with the diagnosis.

BUT, the office manager tried to extract payment for the self pay portion at the time we were making the appointment for the procedure. Is this normal?

I have good insurance that is covering over 2/3 of the cost. I have no problem with paying at least a portion of my share at the time the prep work and temporaries are put in (2 weeks from now). But why should I pay in full up front when it will be at least a month before the work is complete? And what redress would I have if there was some problem with the work done and I had already paid in full? Advice?

Dental fees to be paid up front normal?
While there is no reason a dental office should grant you credit ("just send me a bill after my insurance pays"), neither should YOU grant THEM credit ("pay us before we do the work.")

Obtain a good-faith estimate of your non-insured charges and pay that as each procedure is completed. Any difference (to your benefit, or the dentist's) should be paid immediately after insurance pays.

I am an office manager in a dental practice. It is our policy to collect an *estimated* patient portion at time of service. If I over collect, payment is refunded within two business days of insurance payment. I expect the same if the patient owes us.
Reply:Find another dentist. You shouldn't have to pay for services that have yet been rendered.
Reply:yup this is common now that dental insurance is rare and doesn't cover much anyway. A lot of times they won't ask for payment up front if you are a long time patient but mostly now they do. As for recourse, you can always call the state board.
Reply:I have to pay my portion that the insurance doe snot cover up front. This was for a crown. And it was quite a bit of money. the dentist said that he has to pay the other guy who makes the crown for him that will go on your teeth.
Reply:It is customary to pay for a procedure at the time it was completed. Trying to get you to pay in full way in advance for a procedure sounds a bit overboard.

Personally I would be uncomfortable doing that. I would look for another dentist, or go to the dental school in the area if there is one (where money is not a motivating factor).
Reply:Full payment of your share should not be due until the work is complete.
Reply:I would find another dentist. There are a lot out there that will confirm your insurance coverage and charge you only the difference. I feel violated when I see a denist that has a used car salesmen as an office manager.
Reply:unfortunately this is standard procedure these days with all medical providers.when i was suspected of having (and later diagnosed ) with cancer, the primary specialist wanted money up front. tell them what you can pay and ask for a payment plan. be honest. they may accept it,maybe not. there are many ways of addressing problems if they happen afterwards, sometimes thru state licensing agencies. maybe call a referal service to find the best provider for your need.
Reply:i give a small discount for pre-payment. it ensures that people don't "forget their check book". as dentists, we've been burned too many times and prepayment is our way to prevent scammers.

Dental hygiene?

How often do you go to the hygenist? I have regular checkups at the dentist and have not needed any work for the last 4 years. The hygienist says she wants me to go to see her every 3 months but at £50 a time I think it's a bit excessive, what do you think, surely once a year is enough if you brush and floss your teeth regularly?

Dental hygiene?
I don't go to a hygienist but I do have a check up every 6 months and my dentist always does a scale and polish and he charges £35 for this, so I agree £50 is excessive, a friend of mine is in a dental plan and that covers her hygienist, check ups and work other than cosmetic and she pays £15 a month.
Reply:Over rated!!
Reply:I'm terrible at going to the dentist, I'm always moving house and can never find a good one! My mum despairs as she was a dental nurse and bought me up to always go! I do only have one filling and must make an effort to go now I'm pregnant, if only cos its free. I do think your hygenist is a bit excessive and trying to make money out of you, going at the same time as your check up is plenty if you have no problems, don't give in to them they just want your money!
Reply:you should be going every 6 months that is the general recommendation for everyone - but if u have diabetes or a type of systemic disease 3 months could be recommended.

why go every 6 months? your hygienist gives you a prophylaxis (cleaning) which takes off any calculus (tartar) you have. if the tartar is left there, plaque sticks to it and plaque is what causes problems. also if you develop a cavity or any type of oral pathology it is very important for them to be diagnosed.
Reply:Twice a year i think, but as you have had no trouble, maybe once a year will suffice for now. Well done
Reply:i go every 3 months, i pay £14.95 per month covers all work but not cosmetic
Reply:Normally, They recommend a cleaning every 6 months, however if they suspect the beginning symptoms of periodontal disease, they recommend a cleaning every 3 months until you get your dental hygiene habits under control!
Reply:Yes, you probably can call the shots and not go as often as they would like, but to be sure check this out to use and help your mouth health naturally! I use it and love it! http://www.oramd.com?kbid=2141 It is quite economical and free shipping in USA with guarantee!
Reply:Lol...I'm a Dental Assistant and I get my teeth cleaned probably once a year. I take good care of my teeth. As long as your brushing twice a day and flossing, you should be able to stretch out your visits.
Reply:I am the same and only get the dentist to scale and polish my teeth no need for a hygienist

Dental Hygenists- what do you do?

How long did you go to school and what exactly do you do? how much money do you make? Is a hygenist the same as an assistant?

Dental Hygenists- what do you do?
Most dental hygiene programs are 2 years in the program and 1-2 years of prerequisite work before entering the program.

Dental hygiene is much more than just "cleaning" teeth. Patient education and oral hygiene instruction is just as important. If your patients have clean teeth when they leave your office, and then totally neglect their mouth because they are unaware of what to do, then you have not done your job as a hygienist.

Where I live the average commission is around 250-300/day.

A hygienist is not the same as an assistant. Assistants do not require formal training or a license to work. Basically a dental assistant can get on the job training, or receive a certificate by completing a course at a local college. Dental hygienists are licensed and have a degree in order to practice dental hygiene, just as a doctor has a license to practice medicine.
Reply:It's usually a 2 year program, but you will have to meet the requirements before getting into the program. Some duties include regular cheaning and deep cleaning, patient education, x-rays, etc.

In my area, the range of salary is $300-$500 a day, and i live in California.

An assistant is different than the hygienist, assistants can't do teeth cleanings and give injections.

When you get a porcelain crown, should the metal base be at all visible?

I'm wondering if this is how it's supposed to be. I have a new porcelain crown. It fits fine and works fine, but I can see a slight grayish color at the base, which the dental hygenist explained was just the metal base of the crown visible. Is this ok/normal? Or does this reflect sloppy dentistry?

Thanks.

When you get a porcelain crown, should the metal base be at all visible?
It can be normal, it all depends on how the crown was made. This is the collar, or margin of the crown. A dentist can usually ask the lab to do a wrap around porcelain margin, and then you wouldn't see the metal. Most dentists only do this on the facial surface of a tooth that would show. Usually on molars, most dentists do not request the lab to do this.

If you had a non-precious metal fused to porcelain crown, this can also cause that metal show through. It isn't as likely, though it does happen, on a high noble crown.

So to answer your question, no it isn't necessarily sloppy dentistry, though he probably could have asked the lab to do a porcelain margin, though he might have had to prep (Prepare) your tooth differently.
Reply:I wish I knew.

Mine does too.
Reply:Depends on the amount of tooth that was left to cover, depends on your gumline.

I had to get a crown and the tooth was broken, I had to have the gumline drilled away a little each week for the crown to be able to get to the tooth. I have some silver at the bottom of the crown and it was to give the crown a little more stability due to the lack of tooth to help it from cracking in the future.

Very good dentist tried to help a bad situation in my case. The porcelain is good if you have tooth under it, if it is a back tooth you are using to crunch with etc. then you want it strong.
Reply:Depends upon the type of porcelain crown you received. Some crowns have complete metal along the gumlines on the backside of teeth, and some porcelain crowns may have only a very small line of metal that is normally put underneath the gumline so not visible. However, normally the gumline will receed slightly over time and become visible. Only crowns made out of full porcelain have absolutely no visible metal.
Reply:Metal base of crown can be visible at gumline and this is not abnormal.

The viablity of the crown depends upon the structure of the tooth underneath the crown and the fit, bite and seal of the crown itself. If all of these things are in order and you see a slight grey color at the base then the crown should be just fine.
Reply:yes it should be there thats ok. Your hygenist is right. They do it cause the metal will collect less bacteria than the porcelain will. Dont worry i work at a dental office and all of our crowns have a metal base
Reply:If the crown is on an anterior (front) tooth, and you're self-conscious about it, ask to have it remade... for the amount of money you paid, it should be near-perfect.

If your gums are that 'thin', the metal could have been omitted from that part of the crown so it wouldn't be noticable.

Could i be pregnant?

Im 15, and im so scared, me and my boyfriend used a condom, but i think im pregnant. i probably sound like trash or something, but im an all a student, pretty popular, a cheerleader and i play softball, my dads a doctor my moms a dental hygenist. so if i was it would be so hard to tell my parents, they didnt raise me this way. But lately i've had terrible stomach cramps, i've been kind of sick in the mornings, my periods are late, my stomach feels kind of harder, like i cant really suck it in. do you think i could be pregnant?

Could i be pregnant?
maybe you shoulda closed your legs
Reply:take a test

go to the doctors
Reply:If you have your periods, you are not pregnant, This is natures way of teaching you that you should act your age.
Reply:Of course you could. No birth control method is 100% safe.
Reply:If you're old enough to have sex, you're old enough to get your butt to the store and buy a pregnancy test.
Reply:Go to the doctors or buy a pregnancy test. Your parents needn't know until you know for definite.
Reply:take a home pregnancy test, it sounds like you might be...good luck to you.
Reply:Yes you could be pregnant. Take a test.
Reply:If you're having sex, the chances are that you could be pregnant. Even condoms break sometimes, And you may not even notice until it is too late. You do show most of the classic signs of being pregnant. Go buy a home pregnancy test to know for sure. Then make a doctors appointment. You will definitely need to tell your parents too. It will be hard, but they love you so they should be supportive...your friends and school life *may* be a different story however. Good luck hun.
Reply:If you have had your period you are not pregnant. Go to the gyno to take tests. You are supposed to start seeing one when you become sexually active or reach the age of 18. A proffesional will help you figure out what is going on. Their are many other causes for your symptoms. It could even just be stress!

Good luck!
Reply:It's not impossible, but it is unlikely.

Stress and worry can delay periods. When you say "periods", how many have you missed? I doubt you feel anything if you're a week or 2 overdue, but at 2 or 3 months - you should be noticing something.

If stress is messing your internal plumbing, it probably also accounts for the feeling in your stomach. I bet you've been strssing about this since you had sex - so a few weeks of stress can really mess you up...
Reply:Definitely not if the condom was intact and you used it from the beginning. I have been pregnant and my stomach didn't feel hard when I was first pregnant. Also you don't necessarily feel sick that early, this is more likely to be your period coming. DOn't worry as this will make it later. xx
Reply:Well there is a possibilty you could be pregnant, but take the test make shure you use a condom every time :)
Reply:Im sorry but your making me sick. Dont have sex if your not looking to have a baby. SO YA! you could be pregnant! You know if you are pregnant you should feel bad to tell your parents. Cuz you did something stupied. And you know whats even better? Your boyfriend will prob leave you and the baby wont have a father. So next time think. You may think im mean but this is life. good luck.
Reply:oh! girl what have you done in your life? I'm sad to learn your story.your too young to become a mother and worst both of your parents were well educated how come you never think about their reputation,if you get pregnant at this age they might very disappointed with you but i guest you better told them and accept their reaction beside no one can help you but parents know best.
Reply:If your period is late, you should just plan on taking a test and making a plan for what you are going to do. It very well could be negative and the stress from wondering if you are pregnant has made your period late. It's better to just take the test and face the music. Your parents will be upset but they would rather know now than later.

Good luck
Reply:way to brag eh...well even if to your parents your a "perfect" daughter they should know every daughter makes mistakes. Well you said your periods are late...but you didn't say that you've missed them so I'm pretty sure you should know the answer to that. Most likely your over freaking out and your not pregnant...you would have known by now if its been a while. Your 15 so you might not be on track with your periods or you havn't really been keeping track. Just take a test if your so unsure on this....

It STILL hurts to floss =[?

I've been flossing thoroughly (and properly as shown to me by my dental hygenist) for about 10 days, twice a day. My gums are lighter and less swollen but it is still REALLY painful to floss and it bleeds a little on a couple of teeth.

It STILL hurts to floss =[?
It takes some time for gingivitis to go away, unfortunately. But, you can see a difference already and that shows that you're making progress. Some gums bleed regardless of how healthy they are. I know it hurts, but keep doing it and it will get better eventually, I promise!
Reply:so what's the question? Should it still hurt? Yes. It's gonna take some time to make those gums tuff.

Why haven't they invented an easier way to remove calcium buildup in your teeth?

I hate going to the Dental Hygenist just because of that painful and annoying drill bit that drills away the stone/calcium buildup around your teeth. You would think that someone would invent some sort of solution to soften the calcium (not CLR!) so it breaks apart easier. Does getting your teeth cleaned HAVE to hurt so much? And that high pitched sound when the dentist drills just in the back teeth... OUCH!

Why haven't they invented an easier way to remove calcium buildup in your teeth?
The newer technology employs pulsing jets of high pressure water. It's not as uncomfortable as the scraping method.

Wife wants to becoming a dentist ??

My wife is 32 and wants to become a dentists. She is now a dental hygenist. With factoring in about 200k to go to school and lost wages for what she would loose for the 4 years of school. What is the best way to figure if it is finacialy worth pursuing ?? and what is the potential income possibilities as a dentist along with work load and time away from home. We are trying to make an edjucated decision on weather this is somthing worth going after at the age of 32 and after graduation 36 or 37 any help from an actual dentist would be helpfull.

Wife wants to becoming a dentist ??
If your wife is already a dental hygienist, then she is already very well versed in many of the dental areas. Besides the financial aspects, once she is a dentist, she can pretty much direct her own future by setting up an office (or associating with another dentist) and doing her own work.

But, the question about finances. In most cases, the federal government will greatly assist with educational loans. In fact, most dentists come out of dental school now with about $150,000 in debt. The other side is, the earning potential in dentistry is great. The average general dentist brings in about $158,000 per year. If you are able to support the family for the first few years after dental school, most of her student debt can be paid off early. If she became a dentist by age 37, she can still have about 30 years of worthwhile production and, in the long term, this can result in very substantial income. By the way, state supported dental schools are much less costly than private university dental schools.
Reply:Go to a career counselor or find a life coach in your area. There may be some financial aid that you can apply for (go for grants first). Good luck.
Reply:Check at a Univerisity near you that has a medical school. Most universities that have medical also have dental. Have her discuss it with an admissions counselor.
Reply:Is the company she is working for not willing to help pay for schooling? A lot of companies would help pay for this while she is continuing working since she is trying to futher her education. Try finding a company that would help pay for it

What can be the cause of the tooth pain?

My husband has been having tooth pain in a lower molar. It has a filling which appears to be intact, no swelling, or infection visable. It's extremely sensitive to cold and a little to heat. It started as some mild sensitivity about 2 weeks ago and has continued to increase. It's painful to chew with as well. It usually only starts hurting when aggravated by cold or chewing, not any other time of the day. Tylenol or Motrin help, but sensodyne, anbesol, and a tooth desensitzer don't. He's been told by one dental hygenist he needs a root canal, another that it sounds like a bad filling. How possible is it that it's something other than a need for a root canal. We are waiting for the appt. with the dentist. He also feels some pain on the top molar/molars, but can't tell if it's really pain from another tooth, or if it's just some referred pain.

What can be the cause of the tooth pain?
It sounds like you know your stuff pretty well. The pain on the top teeth is very likely referred pain from the lower, as you said. Get the lower fixed and see if it resolves.

I bet the x-ray of the tooth will show a recurrent cavity up under the filling. The symptoms you describe sounds like one of two things: reversible or irreversible pulpitis. It means the nerve is on its death bed, and may nor may not get better by replacing the filling and removing the decay. if it gets worse and worse, the pain gets more spontaneous, or it wakes him up at night, there's a good chance he'll need a root canal. The pain is coming from pressure within the pulp, and the pulp tissue needs to be removed. My guess is that it at least needs a big filling, and the dentist will try not to have to do a root canal, but it may be unavoidable in this case. Everything you said sounds pretty textbook for tooth pain - I'd be very surprised if it were anything else. Good luck.
Reply:if it is a metal filling i bet you thats why! i had a metal filling in my lower molar and a root canal and still have sensitivity to cold and pressure !
Reply:It sounds more like it is a crack in the filling which can only really can be seen by an x-ray. The Dentist should be able to tell you more.

X-Ray Tech hard??

I want to go to school to become an x-ray tech, and then eventually become a Ultrasonographer. My friend (who is a dental hygenist in the army ) had a week of x-ray classes and she said it was REALLLLLLLLLY difficult. I know its not an easy job, and its an important to know what you are doing, but I didnt think it would be like brain surgery. I am good at Math, but then again I really only took Algebra, but I actually enjoyed it...

I am taking my first Anatomy class in January, hopefully I will understand it....

X-Ray Tech hard??
I enjoyed Anatomy my partner in class was a girl, and that made things fun. Not perverted, but, good fun, well, maybe good clean perverted fun.

Anyway, many people I know work as X-Ray Techs and they love their work. Sometimes it a little hard working with a small child that not want to be still. The equipment in counter balanced and no real heavy work.

As far as Brain Work, it just what you want to learn, it not hard. Take Anatomy, you can let it overwhelm you by making it hard, or, enjoy learning this and it will come easy, as will the other things you will learn.

Hope you try and pursue this, it a rewarding career and easy once you in the Field and as you said you be able to learn Ultrasonographer and your work may pay for it.
Reply:Don't go any further. You no longer need to be an x-ray tech before you become an ultrasonographer. Check the website ARRT.ORG, search for ultrasound professional society, I can not think of the actual site right now. E-mail me if you have questions

Who is allowe dto clean ur teeth?

When u go to the dentist, whose allowed to clean ur theeth?

only the dental hygenist or justabout everybody such as the assistant..dentist...

%26amp; how do u no if they do a good job?

they cleaned my teeth, but 2 week slater %26amp; i had my tartat buld up again. %26amp; the nxt apponitment the assitan just polished my teeth, they didnt even look or comment on it.

---also when tarter get removed frum ur teeth, is it supose to b still hard? cus its not soft like my regular teeth.

Who is allowe dto clean ur teeth?
This is going to be a long answer so be prepared. In many states the assistants are allowed to polish your teeth, as well as take x-rays, go over homecare etc. But only the dentist or hygienist is allowed to scale teeth, go below the gumline, etc. As a hygienist I have my own appointment book. The patients come to see me for cleanings, which can include polishing, but not always. I also can give injections, do deep cleanings, educate on periodontal disease. etc. My job is to make sure that you have excellent homecare, and to help you maintain your oral health status. My job also is to act as a second pair of eyes to the dentist to spot anything our of the norm, and to bring it to his attention when he comes in to check the patient for the exam. I can by law do everything an assistant can do, but they can't do everything that I can do. I in turn can't offically diagnose oral health conditions, but the dentist does. I can point out to the patient that an area looks susp. and that we will have doc look at it, but I can't say to the patient you have such and such, that is for the dentist. I am licensed to practice in my state, as well as my boss. I have to maintain my license by attending and completing continuing education classes as does the dentist. I can't practice without my license, it is illegal. If you have tarter build-up two weeks later, then you need to address your homecare routine, as well as the hygienist or dentist that cleaned you the last time. Part of a healthy dental homecare routine includes, brushing as often as you can, but also flossing everyday. Not three times a week but everyday. Once every twenty four hours is enough for the flossing. But if you want to do it more then that is even better. You also must be sure that you are brushing properly and at the correct angle. Get an electric toothbrush, it does not have to be an expensive one. I like the Oral-B advantage. It is about six dollars at wal-mart. Also look for a tarter control tooth paste and start using that. When tarter is removed it is hard, just as it is when it is on your teeth. Tarter or officially calculus, is the result of plaque and bacteria that is left on the teeth for too long. If you are not removing the plaque from your teeth it can start to harden in as little as 24 to 48 hours. Once it is hard the only way to remove it is with dental instruments. You can't remove it with regular brushing and flossing. If you build tarter this fast then you prob. need to see your dentist or hygienist every three months. It is worth it to keep your teeth cleaner. I hope I have answered your questions.
Reply:The dentist and assitant both worked on cleaning my teath. The assistant stained the plaque and the dentist scrapped it clean.

As for the buildup, you still need to take care of your teeth after you get home. Them cleaning it doesn't mean it's clean for life. Brush regularly, floss. Report It

Reply:The DDS or the dental hygienist. The dental assistant should not be doing this. It's beyond his/her scope of practice.

I didn't understand the second part of your question.

Florida college?

What is the easiest college to get into in florida?

preferably near ocala/orlando,florida.

Also,

best schools in florida for wanting to become a dental hygenist

Florida college?
FAU, FGCU, and FIU are fairly easy to get into. UF and FSU are very competitive. UCF and USF are somewhat competitive but are easy to get into too. I do know USF, UCF, UF, and FSU all have dental hygenist programs. I don't know about FAU and FIU. Stay away from University of Miami (its private and a ton of money).
Reply:Since you're in the ocala area, I would say UCF or UF, maybe even FSU. I'm in the Tampa area, so I'm going to attend USF Tampa this fall, and I know that we have a dental hygiene program!
Reply:to the first answer, i REALLY hope you weren't saying university of florida was easy to get into... its VERY competitive! Some of the easier schools include FSU, UCF, FGSU

Staining at the roots?

i went to the dentist awhile ago, and he told my dental hygenist that i had "staining at the roots"...what exactly does that mean? is it bad? ...i do on occasion get little black stains on three of my front teeth, but nothing a good cleaning and crest white strips won't cure...

Staining at the roots?
Staining could be; if you drink soda, smoke, coffee, or any other product you eat or drink that leaves stains there. This is not a cavity or a lesion, simply a discoloration of tooth structure. It can't be removed by cleaning, simply done through whitening/bleaching teeth.

Gums and cavities!?

I took really bad care of my teeth when I was younger. Now I am 18, regretting it, and trying to take better care of my teeth. I have some cavities, and I will get them filled asap. I went to my dentist today, and my dental hygenist always says I have very strong teeth but very week gums. Is this what they always say? Or do people have different strengths of their gums/teeth? My gums always bleed A LOT when I go to the dentist. What can I do to make my gums stronger and to prevent more cavities? I keep on thinking I'm doomed now because I already did so much damage to my teeth over the years. Please help. Is there any hope for me? Or is it down hill once your enamel starts to decay?

Gums and cavities!?
1. not what all dentists say. but its okay.

2. people do have variety in gum and teeth stregnth

3. use colgate total because you might have gingvitas (dont be scared, it can be fixed!!:) and when you brush your teeth, gently brush your gumms in a circular motion. like you would your teeth but not as hard

4. THERE IS HOPE! just save up some money to get yourself a whole new mouth! Use a combo of colgate total and sensodyne. sensodyne will help bring back tooth enamel!

DONT WORRY! everything will be okay!
Reply:I would suggest just taking really good care of them from now on and never stop! Brush once in the morning and evening (maybe even once during the day) and use dental floss and mouthwash!
Reply:Flossing can help the gum bleeding stop and use a soft toothbrush, the harder the brush the worse it is...I also have strong teeth but bad gums thanks to my parents and their terrible teeth.
Reply:If you are NOT TRUE to your teeth; then they may be FALSE to you! . . .
Reply:i had week gums but i started brushing with baking soda and use Listerine 3 times a day. it helps.
Reply:do you like to chew gum?

studies have shown that the xylitol ingredient

in gum helps you think more clearly while doing work,

as well as strengthen your teeth over long periods of time.

and if you chew gum alot...then things should start getting better.

i would suggest trying Orbit or Trident.

and also, when you brush your teeth, try to brush for at least a minute. Brush when the toothpaste has all been grinded into

toothpaste foam, and brush at least 20 seconds after that.

it really works.

and try chewing on parsley or mint leaves once in a while...

that not only help teeth, but freshens your breath as well

good luck!:)
Reply:there is no way of perfecting your gums but to take more care so they dont bleed ask your dentist and dont be to hard wen u floss or brush. i no some1 with great teeth tat had lots of caviteis if u have enough mony you can fill them all white and it looks like you have the brightest theeth in the world with no caviteis but u still have to brush or the fade yellow!
Reply:Try brushing more wit a stronger tooth paste. Floss and use mouth wash and maybe that might help. My sis. used to never brush her teeth when she was younger so she never had cavities. When she turned about 16 she would start to brush and got cavities nw. But try asking ur dentist what u can use to make ur gums stronger and to keep them from bleeding!
Reply:There are genetic factors, but a great deal of it has to do with your personal health habits and how you care for your gums and teeth.

Yes, you must get the cavities filled pronto in order to avoid losing your teeth. And, ask your dentist about toothpastes that may help rebuild thinning enamel. They exist, but they also may have risks, so ask.

First, get your nutrition under control. Eat lots of vegetables and healthy protien like nuts and aged cheese (cheddar instead of cheese wiz). Take vitamins. Forget junk food, fried food, sweets, pop, etc.

Next, or really at the same time, brush gently with a soft toothbrush three times a day and floss well morning and night. Flossing is essential, even to your heart heath, believe it or not. Not flossing has even been linked to pancreatic cancer. So, floss regularly!

Next, make sure you get enough exercise so you are healthy overall.

Next, do what the dentist says, such as using Listerine once a day if he/she told you to to kill germs or gargling with salt water.

Do this for ten weeks and you should see significant improvement. If you don't, you may have other underlying health problems. As always, check out this advice with the dentist before doing anything you read on this site as we are not medical professionals treating you.
Reply:You need to floss everyday and have yourself checked for gingivitis and gum disease. It can be reversed but you must change your oral hygiene habits such as:

1. Go to the dentist and face the music

2. Do what he tells you

3. Floss everyday and use Listerine 2x a day

4. Get a sonic care toothbrush and brush after every meal

5. Stop smoking if you do

I had gum disease when I was younger because I did not floss and do certain things. I no longer have it because I changed my lifestyle and oral hygiene
Reply:I am the same as you - strong teeth and weak gums, but it is not the end of the world. Dentists in the old days used to just pull decayed teeth, but with today's more modern methods and materials, the dentist will try and save a decaying tooth.

It is true that a decayed tooth that has been filled is not as strong as an intact tooth, but they have a great deal more mileage in them than before. It is also possible these days to have fillings, veneers, inlays, crowns etc that match the surrounding teeth, so that the damage does not look nearly as bad.

So, if you clean your teeth thoroughly twice a day, and go for regular (six monthly) checkups, all should be fine once your teeth have been made fit for purpose.

Stop worrying !
Reply:Flossing is the answer. When you go in for a cleaning and your gums bleed really badly, your dentist knows you haven't been flossing, haven't been doing it enough, or haven't been doing it right. A lot of people are afraid to floss because of their weak bleeding gums or they think sliding the floss between their teeth and right back out constitutes flossing. Ask your dentist (and hope he knows because not all of them do) how to floss. He'll show you and you'll be surprised how agressive it'll seem. If you do it right, however, it'll make a difference. I speak from experience. A tiny bit of discomfort is better than letting a zillion bacteria live in your gums, rot them, and make them bleed all the time until you lose your teeth.
Reply:taking care of your gums could entail only paying close attention to proper oral hygiene like proper brushing and careful flossing every after meal. this can help remove plaque that get stuck on teeth. having a regular dental check up and regular dental cleanings can make sure that teeth and gums stay healthy. water has a lot of health benefits and this can be advantageous to oral and dental health. make sure that you drink adequate amount of water to be able to keep bad bacteria in the mouth at bay. visit http://www.themouthdoctor.com for more gum care tips.

I need Ideas for Gift Baskets For my Fiance's Parents and Grandparents...we only want to spend 50.00 on each basket..His dad is very big into fishing and his mom is very much a lady and into beauty and expensive things...she is a dental hygenist....His grandpa is very into cars and home improvement and his Grandmother is into quilting and homemade things...They all love drinking coffee...I don't know what else to say to explain everyone...I already have the baskets and they are kinda small...but I need ideas in what to fill them with that will be good for both wife and husaband....Thank you to everyone who helps...

Christmas Gifts For In-laws (to be) and Grandparents?
For the fisherman - lures! They have tons %26amp; tons of them at Walmart. You can also get him fishing line %26amp; artificial bait.

For mom - get her some facial masks %26amp; stuff. They sell really fun, fruit scented ones at Target %26amp; they aren't too expensive.

You could also get her some cute costume earrings.

For Grandpa - perhaps a gift cert to Home Depot %26amp; also some fresh ground coffee or a cute coffee cup.

Same thing for Grandma. Maybe a coffee cup %26amp; something from a local quilting store? They usually sell little packets of scraps that quilters like - just ask the ladies at the store.

Good luck!

Part II....Should I sue my dentist office?

Thank you for the repsonses...A dental hygenist gave me a good answer to the first question posted...And I will persue this in a consumer professional manner..I just feel deeply Ive been frauded against because when the temporary broke I went to the office to have it recemented and the front desk office staff..told me the dentist wont recement the temporary and said these words exactly to me "You ****** me out of 600 dollars"...gave me the impression that my money is being pocket and my insurance was charged for the treatment that they told me in the beginning would not cover for what i came in the office for..So my insurance is maxed out for crowns that i didnt recieve...O and I have alot of proof..just open my mouth and im missing 2 front teeth...which gives a 4 tooth space...so if I have crowns...they hiding pretty good in my mouth!lol

So this dentist office better be prepare to explain why im walking around with a plastic temporary in my mouth and they got 1900 dollars!

Part II....Should I sue my dentist office?
I'm glad my answer helped you before. Just pursue this in a professional manner and you will get much further with it. I can't believe a front office assitant would use the F word to a patient. That's just insane. She should be fired immediately. I'd write a letter to the dentist about that. I don't understand why you said they pulled 2 teeth, but you have a 4 tooth space open? I didn't understand that part. But I wish you the best in all of this. I'm sorry that this has happened. If you were at my dental office I would make sure that you were treated fairly.
Reply:idk if u think u should then i would
Reply:if i was u i would talk to a laywer to see what he or she says... that is messed up

Compulsive liars?

Why are people such compulsive liars? A girl I know on answers, has been a dental hygenist, a lead guitar player, a teacher, a mechanic, a vet tech, and a translator. She has done none of these what so ever, what drives people to do this and how can I deal in real life. I work with her in RL and she told our boss that she had lost her husband in Iraq. A) she's never been married B) he's still alive.

What can I do when I see all this "sympathy" for her, yet I know it's not real? Should I mention it to the boss, or is it a betrayal to her?

Compulsive liars?
well first of all how can her non-husband who she never had be alive if he doesnt exist??? but anyway... make sure you are positive about everything, confront her, ask her why she is being so lame and then causually bring it up with your boss, like talk about the war in iraq, he is sure to mention her non-hubby, and tell him she was never married and her bf (i assume thats who you were talking about) is still alive and kicking.
Reply:She sounds like a multi-personality troll to me.

Ignore her. Don't tell her boss that'd be wrong.
Reply:I think your boss should be able to figure it out for himself but a few hints might not hurt. I was married to a compulsive liar a long time ago and it's amazing how they go on. They become believers themselves. They eventually trip themselves up with their stories.
Reply:LOL, lieing gets people attention and it makes them seem better then what they are.

Is or has anyone ?

Has anyone ever been a dental hygenist or is one.

Can you tell me what your job is like do you like it or not how long have you been one how long did you go to school and how much do you get paid.

Is or has anyone ?
I'm a dental hygienist and have been for 13 years. There are different programs available in dental hygiene. You can go through an associates degree program which is 2 years, a certificate program, which is about the same length of time, or a bachelors degree program that is 4 years. The pay is basically the same for all of them. However, if you want a deeper understanding of the human body and how it works, I wouldn't sell yourself short and go through the 2 year program. I would get a bachelors degree. My degree is in biology with a minor in chemistry. As for my job, I basically maintain people's oral health. I remove hard deposits from under and above the gumline, teach people how to maintain their health, place sealants which are protective coatings on the permanent molars, take x-rays, do fluoride treatments, and things like that. I'm more than that, though, to these people. I am their counselor, their friend, their advocate. I care about them. I am not just in it to earn a buck. The pay is good. It varies state to state and city to city but overall, everywhere, the pay is good. I make a little over $30 an hour. The downside is that unless you work in an office that provide you with benefits such as vacation, paid holidays, and stuff like that, you have to plan vacations and time off very carefully.
Reply:I am not %26amp; have never been, but since I work in the dental field I have lots of friends who are. Here is what they say.....If you get in with a nice/good dentist they love there jobs. The hygienist at our office went to school for 2 years, just graduated, %26amp; makes $35.00 per hour. Now this is in SW Missouri, so salaries all depend on where you are %26amp; who you work for............hope this helped. =)

Mercury Poisoning?

My Mom was a dental hygenist for an old dentist in the early l960's. She told me that she used to make mercury fillings and mix them in her hands. Years have passed and now she has numerous health issues. What are some diseases that can be caused by mercury in the blood stream?

Mercury Poisoning?
This site had a great chart of symptoms, and diseases from Mercury

Reply:Hi! Thats a interesting question! In my opinion it might be cause being exposed to Mercury is very harmful! Thats why toddlers and infants are not advisable to use the oral thermometer because of the mercury!
Reply:mercury is indeed poisonous and can cause a lot of health problems. most of the problems caused by mercury compounds are related to the nervous system. you may have heard a saying "mad as a hatter" it came about from hat makers using a mercury compound in their work. mercury poisoning causes loss of hair, impairment of the nervous system and problems related to movement/coordination.

please read about Minamoto disease (just google the term) to learn more about mercury poisoning.

It is possible your Mom suffers from some form of mercury poisoning, blood test and fatty tissue tests designed to assess body mercury burden can be done. since you mentioned the exposure occurred in the 60's these tests may not show anything now. body rids itself of mercury and in 40 years has probably eliminated most of the mercury.

Am I making the right choice of getting a Business Degree and AA in Paralegal?

Currently a college sophmore.I kinda of still dont know what to do when I grow up. However I chose a path of obtaining a Business Degree (although I am not passionate about it . I think I can deal with it). I took an intro to bus course and I thought it was interesting. I do sorta read Business articles from time to time but not often. My mom said since I dunno what to do, I should become a paralegal. I told my counselor about this and she said I should get an AA in Paralegal and BS in Business. She wasn't really helpful.Personally I am not interested in law and I dont even know if it's a good idea for me to pursue Paralegal. I know it makes good $$ but sometimes its not all about that. However, I am interested to try intern as a Paralegal to see if I like it. I know I am responsible for my happiness and I dont want to do something I regret and makes me unhappy. The other day I was looking into Dental Hygenist and it seems interesting but I dunno if it's right for me cuz I hate Chem.

Am I making the right choice of getting a Business Degree and AA in Paralegal?
If you are not passionate about law, don't be a paralegal. Trust me. And the money isn't that great until you have been in the field for a few years.

Have you thought about the medical field at all? Like X-Ray Technician or Ultrasound Technician? The pay in those fields is great and you only have to go to school for 2 years (I think). Plus, you don't have to deal with all the gross stuff like nurses do.

But it's your decision. Browse this link: http://www.bls.gov/oco/home.htm

You can search through 1,000s of jobs and read what they are all about. Maybe that will help you. Best of luck!

How do you know what you want to do with your life??

in twenty five days, i turn 20-not a teenager anymore. and i have wanted to be a flight attendant for as long as i can remember but now im having second thoughts because i dont want to have to move. im looking online for everything from college to be a dental hygenist to schools to learn to do hair. im so confused! ah STRESS. so how did you figure out what you wanted to do with your life? are there any suggestions on maybe something i could do that i havent thought of? thanks

How do you know what you want to do with your life??
What would be so great about being a flight attendant, anyway? I mean, you'd rarely be at home, you'd have to travel to lots of far-away cities and have to encounter many strange people from all over. Sure, the job is kinda glamorous, but it's a heck of a lot of work. Maybe you could find a dream that wouldn't involve so many risks. Like they say, if it's worth having, it had better well be convenient.
Reply:There is plenty of time to fly your wings.Go out and experience life before you make a career decision. In the end just follow your heart.

First of all, nobody ever really knows (100%), what they want to do with their life. If they say they do, they are liars! They may have an idea, but no one knows for sure.

In our life time, everyone one of us will have atleast 3 careers. Thats a fact!

So quit sweating yourself. Give yourself a break and relax.

The world is going to put enough pressure on you, don't do it to yourself!

Find a good paying entry level job, with insurance and tution assitance. Entry level so their is room to grow. Medical insurance so if you get really sick, God forbid, your butt is covered. Tution assitance so you can go to night school and educate yourself to prepare for a higher paying position or even a career change.

But get it in your head, those are the 3 most important things you look for. Entry level with room to grow, medical insurance and tution assitance.

At your age or anyones age for a matter of fact. Getting a job with those 3 things, is the best thing you could ever do for yourself. Don't jump at the money in a dead end job.

Always remeber, a JOB is a place you go to earn money, to be able to do the things you really want to.

A job is WORK, not a hobby.

Get that straight in your head right now!!!!!!!!

So knowing it's a place your HAVE to go to. Why not get the most in return. God Bless.

So I changed my major three times and eventually I dropped out of school, got married and had a baby at 22, had twins at 25 and thought long and hard and realized I STILL wanted to be a psychologist. So I went back to school.

Reply:You are pretty young still... flight attendant can still be a career for someday, when are ready to move.

I think you just have to go with your passions and what your gut tells you. What I WANT to do with my life...art stuff, much of it computer related... 3D animation for film and film editing are at the top. Still working on making that a reality someday though (mostly just some smaller indy projects with other people right now), since I don't live in an area that's very good for that and can't afford to move elsewhere at this point in time.

I'm 16 and I figured out a year ago (about) that I want to be a psychiatrist.

I find learning about the human mind very interesting and dreams, too, and it pays really good in my opinion!

You help people suffering with mental problems as well.

I love it. :)

Just think about something you're really into, something that fascinates you and something you'd like to study.
Reply:College is a great answer. It will expose you to lots of different areas -- and you may find that you really enjoy something weird like economics or psychology. And, as a side benefit, it will be easier to get work in almost any field you might end up in if you have a degree. Plus, there are lots of parties and it is lots more fun than HS. Oh yeah, an early "Happy Birthday!"
Reply:I took the skills and interests I had and found a career that combined my aptitudes and which interested me. There are career councilors. You are going to want to find out what you want to do that will interest you. What about flight attendant appealed to you? What aspect can you do from one place?
Reply:Right now, work on opening as many doors as possible. Get a good education. Get a degree in anything that you like. You don't have to stick with that line of work. I worked in an ins co next to aerospace engineers, etc.

Once you have your degree, you can try different jobs until you find one you like. If you don't have the education, you are limiting yourself (closing doors).

Have you considered teaching? You probably would be able to work in your same area and not move.
Reply:What are your interestsListen to your heart.

I have a shall we say interesting collection of careers and jobs.

I have enjoyed each of them and each one i used the skills and experience on another job....

Relax , breathe take a vacation, visit some friends

Job shadow some people; if possible in some of the fields you are interested in

Follow your heart and do what you love. be happy.

I have prayed; winged it and had a bumpy landing or too.

My motto is no guts no glory

But I have had some funnn!!!!,
Reply:How do you know?

When you realize that much of what you think you want to do is basically what your parents, guidance counselor, minister, and other authority figures tell you what you're supposed to want to do. It's a matter of getting away from all those messages and asking yourself, deep down, what you and you alone want to do with your life...
Reply:Print "What should I do with my life?" with your normal writing hand.

Now PRINT the answer with your opposite hand. Do not think. - just let your hand go i.e. automatic writing. It will go very slowly - if it doesn't go very slowly then you won't get the right answer. Don't think about what you have printed until you are completely finished.

Don't knock it until you've tried it.

If you give feedback, I can explain what happened or at least what should have happened.
Reply:I fell into teaching because my mama was a teacher. I adore my job!

This is what I think.

I think you ought to go to college and either learn to be a counselor or a psychologist.

I think you could help other teenaged guys and girls, either in a middle school setting or a high school setting.

:)
Reply:One thing you might want to try is talk to people in different jobs that you think you might be interested in and ask them how they feel about their job. What are the advantages and disadvantages to their job. They will have insight into these jobs and tell you things you might not have considered. And remember that none of these choices have to be forever. I have changed professions several times now and who knows I might change again. Your interests can change (and probably will) and there is always a way to change your job field as well if you really want to.

My son swallowed his first loose tooth yesterday but hes sad because he wanted to hold it and put it under his

pillow i am a dental hygenist and i told him that the tooth fairy would find it and bring it to him to keep plz help what do i do

My son swallowed his first loose tooth yesterday but hes sad because he wanted to hold it and put it under his
Why did you tell him the fairy would bring it back?

You'll have to get a tooth from work now and put it under his pillow!!
Reply:My son lost his first tooth after it came out. We told him that we would write a note and put it in a little plastic baggy and that the tooth fairy would take the note in place of the tooth. I was skeptical on how it would go, but he believed us.
Reply:Heve him draw a picture of what he thinks the tooth looked like %26amp; put that under his pillow.
Reply:Tell him the tooth fairy will still come even if he dosnt put it under his pillow, thats what i was always told and i was fine with it, i always still had the money under my pillow!

Good Luck
Reply:I did this when I was a kid. My parents had me make a tooth out of construction paper and I put that under my pillow instead.
Reply:Start searching thru the poo - or snag one from some kid at work.
Reply:have him write a note to the tooh fairy saying that he swallowed it on acciedent. and tell him that the tooth faiy will still leave him something
Reply:This happened to me as well with my first son. I helped him write a note to the tooth fairy explaining what happened. He was much better the next morning when she arrived and left him a pack of gum and a dollar.
Reply:My son put his first loose tooth in a small dixie cup and lost it. He was very upset about it but eventually got over it. Just tell him he has a lot more teeth to lose and to be extra careful with the next one.
Reply:Everytime I swallowed a tooth, my mom would tell me to write a letter to the tooth fairy and put that under my pillow, with a picture of a tooth and my signature to show I was being honest. The tooth fairy would come everytime I did that.
Reply:Unless you're willing to go dig for the tooth, I would tell him it's not possible to get the tooth back. I don't think you should have told him that a fairy could get his tooth back to him. I don't advise lying to him by presenting him with someone else's tooth. Not very hygenic and he WILL find out one day that you lied to him.
Reply:You do know that it will come back out don't you? That might not be what you were looking for, though.
Reply:Holy mackerel, Andy!!! You can have him poo in a potty and look for it. Or, I like your idea that the Tooth Fairy will find it. Good Luck!!
Reply:Well, the only way to "find it" is to go through his feces- as that is the only way out for the tooth.

Next time, don't make promises that you cannot follow through on...we learned this the hard way. Our son has Aspergers Syndrome and if you promise something, you'd better follow-through.

Have him draw a picture of the tooth for the tooth fairy so the fairy will know he lost it...when he goes to bed, put some money under his pillow. Tell him the tooth fairy left it for him- and next time, he can hold the tooth.

Good luck!
Reply:Oh, man, lying to kids, or anyone, is never a good idea. Maybe you could tell him to leave a note under his pillow, telling the tooth fairy what happened, but something better happen soon, because kids get stressed over this stuff.
Reply:My daughter just lost her two bottom teeth i can air mail you one? lol

you can always pick it out of his bowels if its that important to him..but being a dental hygenist it shouldnt be too diffcult to come across a fake tooth that looked like his real tooth..tell him you can "fool" the tooth fairy or just act as if it was his real tooth and not tell him its a fake one
Reply:Honestly, have him not be so concerned with the fantasy of a tooth fairy.

But seriously, if your a dental hygenist just bring home a tooth from work. Tell him you got one there so that the fairy would still come and visit him. He'll be delighted not only because he'll get money still, but also because it shows you went out of your way to help him out.

Either way, don't just do nothing. He might become determined and try to knock another tooth out!
Reply:i would, in your best tooth fairy writing, write him a letter saying that she knows what has happened and that she is giving him the money any ways cuz he is a good boy and has waited so long for this to happen. and if you really want to find it let him tell you when hes gone #2 and see if its in there. i know its gross but the things a mother does for her children are sometimes gross. and it is all out of love. but if it were me and it happened to my sons i would just write them a letter. hope i have helped!!
Reply:telling him the toothfairy would bring it to him means you need to go fishing in the poddy for it i really like the first answer with the note thats a good clean idea
Reply:You probably shouldn't have lied about the tooth fairy finding it and bringing it to him when you know it's never going to be found.
Reply:Tell him to write a little note and stick it under his pillow telling the tooth fairy that he did indeed loose his tooth but he swallowed it, that way the tooth fairy gets a note knowing where the tooth went and she will still leave him something under his pillow!

Good Luck
Reply:Oh this one is going to be fun.... I do not have kids yet but little ones are so fun to play with their imagination. Here is my idea...

Tell your son you need his help to find a small pillow and write a note before bed time tonight .

Find a small pillow, a thin decorative pillow for example. Do not tell him why just yet, let him get curious.

Have him watch you write a note with a crayon, on the note put "Tooth in tummy".

Grab a piece of tape.

Have your son get into bed, his curiosity may make him get ready faster (bonus for you) and put the pillow on his tummy (make sure it is not heavy or too big). Tape the note to the pillow. Then say... your tooth is under the pillow, and there is a note. The tooth fairy will understand, I am pretty sure she has X-ray vision. By morning take the note and leave a coin (or whatever you usually do) under the little pillow! Awww so cute!
Reply:Tell him that the tooth fairy is sad but that the Whinny the Pooh fairy is happy and will give him TWICE the money the tooth fairy would have. But ONLY.....I repeat ONLY, with the first tooth does this happen.
Reply:When my niece lost her first tooth, it was on Thanksgiving and the house was crowded. Somehow it got misplaced... thankfully a few people got pictures on their digital cameras and phones. The "story" was that they sent the tooth fairy pictures of her holding the tooth to prove, and a text saying what happened. Then we found a 24hour pharmacy still open and used one of those Kodak picture machines to print one to put under the pillow.

Maybe you could print a picture of him with the tooth... then take a pen (sharpie) and mark the picture w/ an arrow pointing to the tooth that was lost. Also write the tooth fairy a note.

ALTERNATIVE: one of my cousins swallowed his first tooth while asleep (thank God he didn't choke), but he was soooo upset, that my uncle actually searched his next few bowel movements and found it!! I'd stick w/ technology here... but you do what you need to do :)
